CHAPTER NINE The shock of seeing Magda jolted through Gabriel’s body like lightning, turning him into a live wire. Electric shocks ran to all his extremities, making him twitch. Startled, he sloshed the scolding liquid over the rim of the mug, and the instant sting shook him. Gabriel hissed in pain and then swore under his breath. He couldn’t understand why all those things kept happening to him lately. He understood bad karma and respected it, but that was way over the top already. A man was entitled to a break, wasn’t he? He needed one, and right then, but providence didn’t seem in the mood to hand him one. Those last few months had drained virtually all the strength and hope out of him, and his inane optimism simply couldn’t keep up with every single whack over the head he took. G
