A knock sounded at the bedroom door.
"Your Highness?" Lily's gentle voice came from outside.
"May I come in?"
Amelia turned away from the window.
"Come in."
The door opened, and Lily entered carrying a silver tray. A pot of freshly brewed tea, warm bread, and sliced fruit rested neatly on it.
"You haven't eaten since yesterday, Your Highness," Lily said as she placed the tray on the table. "Her Majesty has been so worried."
Amelia looked up.
"The Queen?"
"Yes, Your Highness. His Majesty and Her Majesty have hardly left your side since your accident."
Amelia nodded slowly.
"I'll eat."
Lily smiled with relief.
"I'll inform Their Majesties that you've finally woken up."
Just as Lily reached the door, Amelia called her back.
"Lily."
The maid turned immediately.
"Yes, Your Highness?"
"I... don't remember much."
Lily's expression softened.
"The royal physician warned us that Your Highness might lose some memories after the fall."
"My fall?"
"Yesterday's riding lesson. Your horse was startled and threw you from the saddle."
Amelia lowered her eyes.
That wasn't how the story originally went.
"So... the story has already begun to change."
"Did you say something, Your Highness?"
Amelia smiled faintly.
"No. I'm just thinking."
Lily bowed and quietly left the room.
Amelia walked toward the large mirror standing beside the wardrobe.
The girl staring back at her was breathtaking.
Long chestnut-brown hair flowed past her waist in soft waves.
Bright blue eyes reflected both curiosity and determination.
Her porcelain skin was flawless, and her delicate features looked almost unreal.
She reached up and touched her own cheek.
"So this is what the heroine really looked like..."
In the novel, the heroine had been described as the most beautiful young lady in the empire.
Unfortunately...
Beauty had never protected her.
Amelia's gaze hardened.
"It won't be the same this time."
She knew every major event waiting ahead.
The royal banquet.
The engagement ceremony.
The assassination attempt.
The betrayal that destroyed the heroine's family.
And finally...
Her death.
Every one of those events was now a chance to change the future.
A sudden warmth spread through her chest.
She froze.
A faint purple light shimmered beneath the skin of her hand before fading almost instantly.
Amelia stared at her fingers.
"...What was that?"
She tried moving her hand again.
This time, tiny specks of violet light danced around her fingertips like glowing fireflies before disappearing into the air.
Her heart skipped a beat.
"Magic?"
The heroine had never possessed magic.
So where had this come from?
A gentle voice echoed inside her mind.
"A second chance deserves a new beginning."
Amelia spun around.
"Who's there?"
Silence.
The room was empty.
Only the gentle breeze drifted through the open window, causing the curtains to sway.
She took a cautious step forward.
"Show yourself!"
Again, no answer.
Just as she was about to convince herself she had imagined it, the voice returned.
"The fate written in this world is no longer absolute."
Amelia held her breath.
"What do you mean?"
"You have been chosen to change what was once destined."
Her eyes widened.
"Chosen... by who?"
The voice remained silent for several seconds before speaking one final time.
"Protect the power you have been given."
"Trust no one until the time is right."
"Not even those closest to you."
Amelia spun around.
"Who's there?"
No one answered.
The room was empty.
Only the breeze drifted through the open window.
She looked back at the faint glow lingering around her hand.
Whatever had brought her into this world...
...had given her something the original heroine never had.
"So... this power is real."
A small smile appeared on her face.
Until she understood what this power truly was...
No one could know.
Not the King.
Not the Queen.
Not even Lily.
Before she could think any further, another knock came from the door.
"Young Lady," Lily called nervously.
"His Highness, Crown Prince Lucien, has arrived."
Amelia slowly closed her hand.
The glow vanished.
She smiled.
"Tell His Highness I'll be there shortly."
Lily hesitated.
"...Should I tell him you're still unwell?"
Amelia shook her head.
"No."
Her blue eyes reflected quiet determination.
"It's time I met the man who was supposed to destroy my life."
She walked toward the door.
Only this time...
She wasn't the same Amelia the novel had written.
She was Amelia Hart.
And she intended to rewrite every page of her fate.
