Dawson
“Alpha?” I snapped my eyes up to look at my head of patrol, having lost track of the conversation yet again. f**k. Focus Dawson.
“Pardon me.” I muttered, embarrassed.
The dark haired wolf, Noble, inclined his head, graciously. “I was just asking if we should increase patrol along the western boarder.
It wasn’t a bad idea. After getting home to our city and tucking Gaia safely into bed at our packhouse, I had met with the patrol and run the boarder, seeing if I recognized the scents of the wolves that had crossed our lands last night. Was it only last night? It seemed like days had passed since the moment Gaia had turned eighteen and her wolf had emerged.
I was practically giddy with happiness. Not only had I found my mate, my Luna, but she was perfect. Gorgeous, smart, funny, charismatic, a natural leader and a powerful wolf. She had a breathtaking gold color to her fur, and she was fast and lithe. I felt myself getting hard just thinking about her, upstairs in my bed. My wolf roared at me to leave this meeting and go be with my mate. I couldn’t wait to mark her, mate her, make her mine forever.
Noble cleared his throat, doing a poor job of hiding a grin. “Um…Alpha?”
Shit! I cleared my throat, refocusing. “My apologies. Yes. It’s a good idea. I doubt whoever it was would be stupid enough to try it again, but they might get close, and at least we might be able to figure out who they are. Don’t wear yourselves out on it, though. I want the pack nearby to get to know your new Luna.”
“Yes Alpha.” He inclined his head, respectful as he always was. More so than almost any other ranked member of the pack. He started to take a step away before turning back, a small smile on his face. “Alpha?”
“Yes?”
“May I just say…congratulations. We’re all so excited that you’ve found the Luna.”
I couldn’t help but smile back. It wasn’t like I was ancient. At twenty-two, I was still a young Alpha. But I had expected to feel my mating bond hit me the moment I had turned eighteen, like many young wolves. When my mate hadn’t been within Blood Moon, I had started visiting other packs, in case my mate was among them. But nothing. Nothing until this beautiful girl who had walked into my business meeting. “Thank you, Noble.” He nodded again and left my office. I stood. It was mid afternoon now. I had told the guards to alert me the moment Gaia awoke, and hadn’t heard anything, but I couldn’t stay away any longer. I crossed the room and opened the door.
“Hello, love.” I gazed down at my mother, standing cheerily in the doorway of my office. I had no doubt she had been eavesdropping. I rolled my eyes.
“Mother.” I leaned down to kiss her cheek and she linked her arm through mine, sauntering beside me towards the lobby. I cursed inwardly. “How can I help you?”
“Can’t a mother simply want to see her son?”
I snorted. “Yes, she can. But this timing seems a little pointed, don’t you think?”
She shrugged. “Maybe I want to meet my future daughter-in-law! Sue me!”
I rolled my eyes, stopping to look down at my lovely mother. She was still lovely, and a gracious and kind Luna. Of course, she had had to give up the title two years ago when my father had died, making me the new Alpha. I noticed dark circles under her eyes and frowned. She never slept well when I was not home.
“Mom, she just found out she was my mate last night. She just found out she was a wolf last night. I think she might need some time to adjust before I introduce her to my mother.”
“Why, what’s wrong with me?”
I groaned. “Nothing, Ma, she’s gonna love you, but maybe we could give her a chance to love me, first?”
She sniffed in displeasure, and we resumed walking towards the stairs. “I will make no promises of that, son. I am naturally loveable. Besides, I’ve waited twenty-two years for a daughter.”
“Thanks, Mom. Good to know you didn’t want me.”
She swatted my chest. “You know I love you! And I would never trade you for anyone else. But a female always wants a little princess!” She looked up at me, her amber eyes glistening with emotion. I had gotten my blue ones from my dad. It was why she sometimes struggled to look directly into them. “I hear she’s beautiful.” She whispered; her voice full of wonder.
I couldn’t hold back my grin. “She is, Mom. She’s amazing. She’s gonna fit in perfectly here.”
There came a thunderous roar from above, causing the chandelier in the lobby of our cabin packhouse to swing violently from side to side. If she doesn’t kill us all, first. My stomach clenched, my wolf knowing all was not well with my mate.
Alpha!
I heard in my head, but I was already taking the stairs three at a time, dashing up to the Alpha wing, leaving my mother dumbstruck in the lobby behind me. I could hear snarls and growls, and the shouts of my men.
“Luna! Luna, please!”
“Get away from her!” I snarled, putting the authority of the Alpha into my voice, as I sailed around the corner. The four males I had left to guard my mate, including Khason, now stood in the hall outside my bedroom. Their heads snapped in unison to look at me as I approached. “Leave. Now.”
“Daws…” Khason glanced back at the bedroom door warily.
“NOW!” I thundered. Without a second glance, each of them left so fast they almost vanished. The double doors of my bedroom were still closed, but I could hear her pacing inside. My Luna.
Steeling myself, I pushed open the door and stepped into the room.
