"Chill out."

Dawson I was vibrating as our sedan crawled through the downtown city streets. I itched to get out, shift and run as fast as my legs would take me. “Breathe, Daws.” Khason smirked at me, lounging across the opposite seat of the limo. “Chill out.” “Chill out?” I snapped at my Beta and best friend. He was the calm to my storm, his easy going, mischievous nature a perfect balance to my more serious personality. But sometimes he was a downright i***t. “Chill out? Khason, that girl is my mate.” I had known it from the moment I locked eyes with her. I had been able to smell her even as we walked into the building, the scent intensifying as we stepped into the elevator, and then onto the top floor. The smell was incredible, sharp and sensual like cinnamon and cherries. As we’d passed her desk, I’d scanned the area, sure she was near. It wasn’t until she entered the room, until her reaction to my voice, until my eyes had met hers, that I was certain. MATE! I shook my head, fingers tapping restlessly on the arm rest. “She turns eighteen tomorrow. She may not be human.” “Awfully late bloomer for her not to shift until eighteen…” “You didn’t shift until you were ten.” “Yeah, and then I didn’t shift back for eight freaking months!” He snapped indignantly. I rolled my eyes. My claws lengthened and retracted over and over as I urged Noble to drive faster. The black partition was up between us and him, which is why we spoke freely. “She is my Luna. And tomorrow, she will know it.” “ Mother's t**s, Daws…you can’t really be thinking about confessing to an eighteen-year-old human girl that you’re a werewolf, in love with her, and want to take her away to the mountains to be queen of a werewolf pack?” I clenched my jaw. Actually, yes, that was exactly what I had been thinking. “What would you have me do, Khason?” “Wait for her to come to you. When she hits eighteen, the mate bond should lock in for her too. Just be patient, okay?” His face was sympathetic but I couldn’t find peace. As the car finally slowed to a stop, I rocketed out the door before Noble could put it in park. “Alph-Dawson!” Khason called after me, but I could barely keep the wolf at bay. I sprinted down the street as fast as I could to our hotel, while my wolf howled in my chest. MATE! The wolf roared in my chest. Gaia…
