Chapter 1: Part 2 — The Space Between Us

710 Words
--- Zayden’s POV “Finally,” I said, stretching my arms after placing our bags down in the guest room. “We’re home.” I looked over my shoulder and saw her—Savrielle—fixing her hair in the mirror, trying to act composed. She always did that when she was nervous. I smiled. “Hey,” I whispered, walking toward her and wrapping my arms around her waist. “You’ll be fine. They’re going to love you.” She gave me a small nod, but her smile didn’t quite reach her eyes. Still, I kissed her cheek and whispered again, “You got this.” That was one of the things I admired about her—kahit kinakabahan, she never backed down. She always carried herself with grace, even in unfamiliar places. --- She had no idea how much this moment meant to me. Bringing her home, showing her to my family… It felt like we were starting something real. Something serious. Even if there was no wedding, no papers, no rings— She was mine. And I was proud of it. She met a few of my college friends before, pero iba ‘to. My family? They meant everything to me. Especially Kuya. I looked up to him, kahit hindi kami gano’n ka-showy sa isa’t isa. And now, I was introducing her to all of them. It felt big. It felt right. --- We stepped into the living room, and there he was. Kaizen. My older brother. Sharp. Quiet. Always unreadable. He stood up from the couch when he saw us. I smiled big and pulled Savrielle closer. “Kuya!” I grinned. “Nandito na kami.” He didn’t move right away. Just stared. And for a second—just one second—I thought something flickered in his eyes. A memory? A thought? Then it was gone. “Welcome,” he said, voice low. That was Kuya for you—man of few words. Always had this mysterious aura that made people nervous around him. But I’d grown used to it. --- I introduced Savrielle like any proud boyfriend would. “This is her—si Sav. She’s my girl. The one I told you about.” Savrielle gave him a polite smile. “Nice to meet you po, Kuya Kaizen.” But I noticed something. They didn’t shake hands. They didn’t move. They just looked at each other—for a second too long. Then Kaizen looked away. I didn’t think too much of it. Kuya was always like that. Cold. Guarded. Maybe he was just surprised that I brought someone home this soon. Maybe he didn’t expect me to be this serious already. Or maybe he was just sizing her up. You know, big brother instincts. --- The rest of the afternoon went on normally. Mama welcomed us with open arms. Papa was already in the kitchen, nagluluto ng paborito kong kaldereta. Everyone was excited to meet Savrielle. Even Chesca, my baby sister, ran down the stairs to hug us. “She’s so pretty, Kuya!” she whispered to me when Savrielle wasn’t looking. I ruffled her hair. “Told you.” But Kaizen? He stayed quiet. Watching. Observing. Barely speaking. I brushed it off. He probably had a long day. Or maybe he was just being his usual, moody self. Besides, all I could think about was how perfectly Savrielle fit into this house. Into this life. My life. --- That night, after dinner, we all sat around the living room. I sat beside Sav, our hands intertwined. She laughed at Mama’s stories, helped clean the table, even played with Chesca—who had started clinging to her like a new big sister. She was everything I wanted in a partner. Kind. Beautiful. Gentle. And yet… I could feel Kuya’s eyes now and then. Watching her. Quiet. Still, he didn’t say anything. Didn’t ask anything. Just like me, he smiled politely. Like there wasn’t a history buried beneath the silence. Like everything was new. --- But I didn’t know that. Not yet. Because to me, she was just mine. And Kuya? He was just… my brother. Nothing more. Nothing less. --- End of Chapter 1: Part 2
