Chapter 1: Dreams on a Shoestring Budget

476 Words
Aldren Nieves was an ordinary high school boy with an extraordinary dream. He wanted to be a film director, creating stories that would light up the big screen. But there was a problem: his family didn't have much money. "Hey, Aldren! You coming to the park later?" Kendrick, his best friend, called out as they walked through the bustling school corridors. Aldren grinned. "Of course, Kendrick! Wouldn't miss it for the world." They both loved spending time at the park, cracking jokes and forgetting about their worries. But behind his smile, Aldren carried a heavy burden. He worried about how he would ever afford film school. Later that day, as the sun began to set, Aldren headed to the park. The warm breeze rustled the leaves, and kids played on the swings. He found Kendrick lounging on a bench. "Hey, Aldren! You brought the camera, right?" Kendrick asked, his eyes gleaming with mischief. Aldren nodded, patting his worn-out camera bag. It wasn't the latest model, but it was his most prized possession. "You know it!" As they sat together, Aldren opened up about his dreams. "Kendrick, I really want to go to film school. But my family can barely make ends meet. How am I supposed to afford it?" Kendrick nudged him playfully. "Don't worry, buddy! You've got the talent. Something will work out." Aldren chuckled. "I hope so. I've been working on this movie idea called 'Under the Moonlight.' It's about two people falling in love despite all odds." Kendrick's eyes lit up. "That sounds amazing! Let's shoot a scene today. Maybe it'll be your ticket to film school!" They set up their makeshift set near a beautiful tree. Aldren adjusted the camera while Kendrick put on a silly hat. "Action!" Aldren called out, and they began their impromptu scene. As they wrapped up, Aldren checked the footage. "It's not perfect, but it's a start." Kendrick patted him on the back. "Remember, even the greatest directors had to start somewhere." Days turned into weeks, and Aldren continued to work on "Under the Moonlight." He used his imagination to transform ordinary locations into movie sets. Every penny he saved went into buying props and costumes. One afternoon, Aldren was engrossed in editing when his younger sister, Jannet, barged into his room. "Aldren, Mom says dinner's ready!" "In a minute, Jannet. I just need to finish this scene," he replied, not looking up from his computer. Jannet huffed. "You're always so busy with your movie stuff. Don't forget you have a family too!" Aldren sighed, finally looking at his sister. "I know, Jannet. I'm sorry. I just want to make something special." Jannet softened. "I get it. Just don't forget to spend time with us too." As the days went on, Aldren's passion and determination grew stronger. He faced setbacks and challenges, but he never gave up.
