Upon hearing that Scarlett had injured her leg, Alpha River remained at her cabin to tend to her, his wolf ever vigilant beside her white wolf.
He never reappeared until I returned home alone.
Inside the cabin, Lucas was playing with his toys. Upon seeing me return, he merely lifted an eyelid. "Mother, why did you come back? You injured Scarlett's leg—she can't even run anymore."
I ignored him, not bothering with this ungrateful cub.
He flung his toy aside and rushed to block my path. "You're not going anywhere!"
"You must apologise to Scarlett! Now! Or I'll disown you as my mother!"
I replied, "Fine, then I'll simply pretend I never had a cub like you."
After all these years of raising and doting on him, to find he's nothing but an ungrateful whelp in the end—well, I'd rather not have him at all.
He huffed indignantly, "Mum's always spouting threats. Dad says your wolf adored his wolf most of all. How could you ever abandon us?"
"He also said you used to cling to him like glue, impossible to shake off. Same with me—hasn't your wolf always loved chasing after me?"
I suspect much of the cub's thinking has been instilled by Alpha River.
They were utterly convinced my wolf and I couldn't live without them.
I gently pushed him away. "Lucas, you're still young. Your wolf spirit hasn't awakened yet, so you don't understand many things. Before, your mother would teach you, but from today onwards, I won't teach you anymore. Do as you please."
With that, I turned to head into the inner chamber.
But no sooner had I turned sideways than Lucas, gritting his teeth, shoved me out with all his might.
With only the staircase beside me and nothing to grasp, my body lost its balance and tumbled down the steps.
Lucas stood above me, baring his teeth and mimicking a wolf's movements. "Stop your nonsense! Stop trying to control me! I don't need your control!"
"Father said Scarlett would be my mother anyway. I don't need you as a mother at all."
"Your wolf is utterly useless, just an ordinary grey wolf. It can't hold a candle to even a single white hair on Scarlett!"
I tumbled down the stairs, my head pounding from the impact, my body aching so badly I couldn't muster any strength. My wolf howled in agony.
Before I could process it, a searing pain shot through my lower abdomen.
I immediately realised what was happening and let out a terrified whimper.
"Lucas, fetch the pack doctor!"
He stood motionless on the stairs, watching me. "Here we go again. Your wolf is perfectly fine. Stop pretending."
"Mother, Father isn't in the cabin now. There's no need to pretend."
My plea to Lucas went unheeded, so I screamed desperately for help. My wolf howled in anguish, hoping the clan members nearby would hear.
But it all proved utterly futile.
The pain in my stomach grew worse, and panic seized my heart. My wolf began to howl in despair. Gradually, a dampness spread across my lower body.
I looked down to see bright red blood spreading steadily across my lower body.
Lucas looked on, visibly shaken. "Mother... you... why are you bleeding so much?"
Suddenly, footsteps echoed at the cabin door. "What on earth are you all doing?"
I turned to see Alpha River. He immediately detected the scent of blood.
Seeing my state, he gasped in shock, letting out an anxious howl as he rushed over. "Vera, what's wrong? What happened?"
Shivering with pain, my wolf whimpered weakly. I grabbed hold of his clothes. "Quickly, take me to the pack doctor..."
He scooped me up to carry me away. For the first time, I saw genuine worry etched upon his face.
Lucas tumbled down the stairs, clutching Alpha River's legs. "Father, Mother fell down the stairs herself! She got angry when I said Scarlett was better than her and tried to hit me. I dodged, and she fell on her own. It really had nothing to do with me, Father!"
I could scarcely believe it. This was the cub I'd raised myself, twisting truth and lies so brazenly!
Alpha River nodded repeatedly, soothing Lucas. "Very well, I understand. Don't worry. Your mother lost a lot of blood. Stay quietly in the cabin. Father must take your mother to the pack doctor."
Only then did he look at me and nod timidly.
He was probably afraid I'd reveal the truth.
Alpha River escorted me to the pack doctor. Along the way, his doubts grew, and he pressed, "Vera, what on earth is wrong with you?"
I replied, "I'm carrying a pup." My wolf gave a mournful whine.
He stared at me in astonishment, his eyes wide with shock. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
"Don't worry, we'll be at the pack doctor's cabin soon."
I said calmly, my wolf now utterly despondent. "It's fine. I never intended to keep this pup anyway."
He halted abruptly, letting out an angry growl. He turned to look at me, disbelief etched across his face. "What did you say?"
I met his gaze, my eyes resolute. "I said, I never intended to keep this cub anyway."
His face turned ashen, fists clenched at the brink of fury. "Why? Vera, why abandon this cub?"
I lowered my head. My wolf whimpered mournfully. "Because this cub should never have come into this world."
A flicker of anguish crossed his eyes, his wolf howling in sorrow. "Vera, are you still angry with me?"
I shook my head, my tone resolute, my wolf equally determined. "Alpha River, let us dissolve our bond."
