I had been in the Mist for four days and my father hadn’t contacted me. With each day, my nervousness regarding my kidnapping increased.
The castle was brimming with people who despised me. Other than Hailey, no one talked to me and they never let me forget I was an enemy’s daughter. The maids would try not to serve me, the guards would try not to protect me, and they gossiped behind my back that I was responsible for Cathy’s expulsion. She was obviously their favorite. Why did it affect me, even though logically she should have been their favorite? What made me think I could intervene in their relationship? But I still craved their acceptance. Absolutely ridiculous. Perhaps kidnapping did that to your nerves.
