Mira walked with Lena across the courtyard.
“Rule number one,” Mira said. “Never go into the forest at night.”
Lena looked toward the dark woods surrounding the academy.
“Why?”
“You’ll see.”
That wasn’t a comforting answer.
Students filled the stone pathways between buildings. Some practiced strange glowing magic with their hands.
Lena blinked.
“Wait… did that guy just create fire?”
“Oh,” Mira said casually. “Yeah. Some students here have abilities.”
“Abilities?”
“You didn’t know?”
“No!”
Mira stopped walking.
“You really don’t know why you were sent here, do you?”
Before Lena could answer, whispers spread across the courtyard.
“Look.”
“He’s back.”
Lena followed everyone’s gaze.
A tall boy leaned against one of the pillars near the main building.
Black jacket.
Messy dark hair.
Cold grey eyes.
Something about him felt… dangerous.
“Who’s that?” Lena asked.
Mira sighed.
“That’s Kai Raven.”
“And?”
“He’s trouble.”
Kai slowly lifted his head.
His eyes met Lena’s from across the courtyard.
For a moment the entire world felt silent.
Then Lena noticed something strange.
The shadows around Kai’s feet shifted.
Like living things.
Kai looked at her for a long moment.
Then he turned and walked away.
Mira grabbed Lena’s arm.
“Trust me,” she whispered.
“You do NOT want his attention.”
Unfortunately…
Lena already had it.
