The old Kane estate stood beyond the city, hidden behind a long iron gate and surrounded by thick, overgrown trees.
Sophia stared through the car window.
She had never been there before.
Yet something about the place felt strangely familiar.
The broken fountain.
The enormous stone mansion.
The dark windows staring back at them.
Everything looked abandoned.
"Are you sure about this?" Alexander asked.
Sophia tightened her fingers around her mother's silver pendant.
"No."
Alexander glanced at her.
"But I'm going in anyway."
He sighed.
"Then I'm going with you."
Sophia looked at him.
"You don't have to."
"I know."
He parked the car.
"I want to."
They stepped out together.
The moment they approached the gate, it creaked open.
Sophia stopped.
"Someone knew we were coming."
