CHAPTER 2: THE BEAST

ELARA POV “He’s here," Sarah whispered. It suddenly hit me like ice water as I stepped off the elevator. My stomach twisting into knots. The entire executive floor had gone dead silent. Just fear hanging thick in the air, and I'm sure everyone felt Stephen Black had arrived. Through the glass walls of the conference room, I saw him, he was tall and very broad-shouldered, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit that made him look like he owned the whole damn building already. His dark hair was slicked back, and those sharp, predatory eyes scanning the room like a wolf picking out the weakest prey. Everyone was terrified. I swallowed hard and forced my legs to move. My blue suit suddenly felt like cheap armor against a hurricane. After yesterday’s nightmare, I thought nothing could get worse. I was wrong. I pushed open the heavy glass door to the main conference room without knocking. The tension inside snapped like a live wire. Stephen Black turned slowly. Our eyes locked. Time stopped. He was even more intimidating up close with his sharp jaw, a faint scar near his left eyebrow. But there was something else, something more dangerous and electric that made my skin tingle with anger, and something I refused to name. “You must be Elara Hart,” he said, voice low and smooth like velvet over steel. A faint, arrogant smile played on his lips. “The princess of a sinking ship.” My blood boiled instantly. “And you must be the vulture circling our corpse.” The room went even quieter. One of the lawyers coughed nervously. Dad stood at the head of the table, looking pale and defeated, his hands gripping the back of his chair so tightly his knuckles were white. Stephen chuckled softly, completely unbothered. He took a step closer, towering over me. “Feisty. I like that.” “Stay away from my family,” I hissed, my fists clenched at my sides. My heart raced so fast I felt dizzy. Everything about him radiated power, a raw, merciless power. Yet when his eyes raked over me, slow and deliberate, heat flared in my chest. Hate. It had to be hate. He tilted his head, studying me like I was a puzzle he intended to solve. “Your father already invited me in, sweetheart. I’m here to save what’s left of this mess.” “Save it?” I stepped forward, refusing to back down even though my knees felt weak. “By buying us out like cheap property? By demanding *me* as part of the deal? You’re disgusting.” Dad’s voice cracked. “Elara, please..” “No, Dad!” I whirled on him, tears of fury burning my eyes. “You let this monster walk in here after everything? After Mr. Delgado got escorted out like a criminal? After Lisa cried at her desk because she couldn’t feed her kids if she lost this job.” Stephen watched our exchange with that same calm, infuriating smile. He leaned against the edge of the long table, arms crossed, looking completely in control. Everyone else in the room, the lawyers, executives, even the security standing by the door all seemed to shrink back. I turned back to him, voice shaking with rage. “You think you can just walk in, wave your money around, and own us? Own me? I’ve read about you, Black. The Beast. You destroy lives. Tell me how many companies you have gutted? How many families have you left broken?” He didn’t flinch. Instead, his smile deepened, slow and dangerous. Those dark eyes sparkled with what looked like amusement and interest. “Careful, Elara. You’re even more beautiful when you’re angry.” The words hit me like a spark on gasoline. Explosive. Before I could think, my hand flew up and connected hard with his cheek. I had slapped him The sound echoed through the silent room like a gunshot. Dad looked horrified. One of the lawyers dropped his pen. Stephen’s head barely moved. He touched his reddening cheek with two fingers, then let out a low, rumbling laugh. Not angry. Not offended. Just pleased. Like I had passed some twisted test. He simply smiled. Wider this time. A smile that sent shivers racing down my spine. “Stubborn indeed,” he murmured, stepping even closer until I could smell his expensive cologne, dark, woody, intoxicating. “I’m going to enjoy breaking you in, Elara Hart.” My breath hitched. The pull between us was insane. I wanted to slap him again. I wanted to scream. Part of me, deep down, was terrifyingly aware of how alive I suddenly felt standing this close to him. “Get out,” I whispered, voice trembling. “We don’t need your kind of salvation.” Stephen glanced at my father, then back at me. The playful mask slipped for just a second, revealing the cold, ruthless businessman underneath. He pulled a thick document from his briefcase and slid it across the table toward Dad. “Your father has until tomorrow morning,” he said flatly. “Sign the merger papers, accept all terms, including our… personal arrangement, or the authorities get the full evidence of your little accounting games, Richard.” Dad’s face went ghostly white. “Stephen, we had a deal..” “The deal changed when your daughter walked in,” Stephen replied, his eyes never leaving mine. “She’s part of it now. Make her understand.” I felt the floor tilt beneath me. “What evidence?” I demanded, looking between them. “Dad?” My father wouldn’t meet my eyes. His shoulders shook. Stephen leaned in close to me, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper that only I could hear. “Sign… or your father goes to prison tomorrow.” The words hung in the air like a death sentence. My world shattered. The workers outside cried in the hallways. The legacy my family built over decades was slipping through my fingers. And the man responsible, the Beast himself, stood inches away, smiling like he had already won. I stared into Stephen Black’s eyes, He simply smiled back.
