Chapter One: The Unexpected Truth

700 Words
Emilia had always felt like an outsider in her own family. Her mother, Sarah, kept secrets behind a mask of warmth and love. Emilia's father, Alexander, was a distant memory, a name rarely spoken. She grew up with more questions than answers. On her 17th birthday, Emilia's mother finally revealed the truth. They sat in their cozy living room, surrounded by flickering candles and the soft glow of the full moon outside. "Emilia, you're a werewolf," Sarah said, her voice trembling. Emilia laughed, thinking it was a joke. But Sarah's expression was dead serious. "Your father, Alexander, was a werewolf. You inherited his...condition." Emilia's world spun out of control. Werewolves didn't exist. They were myths, legends, and fairy tales. Yet, here she was, facing a truth that would change her life forever. Emilia's mind raced with questions, but her mother's expression silenced her. Sarah's eyes gleamed with a mix of fear and determination, a look Emilia had never seen before. "How...how is this possible?" Emilia stuttered, her voice barely audible. Sarah took a deep breath, her words spilling out in a rush. "Alexander was a werewolf, Emilia. A pack leader. He met me in college, and...we fell in love. But his world, it's not safe. He wanted to protect you, so he left us. To keep you hidden." Emilia's thoughts swirled, struggling to comprehend the secrets her mother had kept hidden for so long. Werewolves, packs, and secrets – it sounded like a fantasy novel, not her life. "What do you mean, 'his world'?" Emilia asked, her curiosity piqued despite herself. Sarah hesitated, glancing around the room as if searching for an escape. "The supernatural world, Emilia. Werewolves, vampires, witches...they exist. And they're not always friendly." Emilia's skepticism faltered, replaced by a creeping sense of unease. Her mother's words painted a picture of a hidden world, one that Emilia was now a part of, whether she liked it or not. Sarah's words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken truths. Emilia's mind raced with questions, but her mother's expression warned her to tread carefully. "What does this mean for me?" Emilia asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Sarah's eyes filled with a deep sadness. "You'll need to learn control, Emilia. Your...transformation is coming. And soon." Emilia's heart raced as she processed her mother's words. Transformation? What did that even mean? Suddenly, the room began to spin, and Emilia's vision blurred. She felt a strange sensation coursing through her veins, like her body was awakening from a deep slumber. "Mom?" Emilia called out, her voice shaking. Sarah rushed to her side, holding her tight. "It's starting, Emilia. Your body is changing. Just breathe, baby. It'll pass." Emilia's world went dark, consumed by a searing pain that threatened to tear her apart. When she came to, she was lying on the couch, her mother hovering over her. The room was quiet, the candles extinguished, and the moon hidden behind clouds. But something was different. Emilia felt it in her bones, a newfound power coursing through her veins. Emilia sat up, her head spinning. Her mother helped her sit up, holding her steady. "Easy, baby. You've had a big night," Sarah said, her voice soothing. Emilia's gaze fell on her hands, and she gasped. They were different, somehow. Stronger, more defined. And her senses...she could smell the candles, the wood, and the moonlight like never before. "What's happening to me?" Emilia asked, fear creeping in. Sarah's expression was a mix of sadness and determination. "You're becoming what you were meant to be, Emilia. A werewolf." The word hung in the air, a label Emilia wasn't sure she was ready for. "We need to leave," Sarah said, her voice firm. "Raven's Peak is waiting for us. Your father's pack will help you learn control." Emilia's mind raced with questions, but her mother's urgency was contagious. She nodded, and together they packed a small bag, leaving behind the only life Emilia had ever known. As they drove away, Emilia caught a glimpse of the moon, full and bright in the sky. She felt an inexplicable pull, a sense of belonging to something greater than herself. Little did she know, her journey was just beginning.
