Chapter 14: A Brother’s Return

1637 Words
“Not every homecoming brings peace. Sometimes it awakens the past.” The grand doors of Kane Mansion closed behind Alexander Kane. For a moment, no one spoke. Victor could not take his eyes off his older brother. Thirty years had passed since they had last seen each other. The young man Victor remembered had become an elderly gentleman with silver hair and a walking cane, yet the resemblance was unmistakable. “I searched for you,” Victor said, his voice breaking. “I searched for years.” Alexander smiled faintly. “I know.” “You knew?” “I received every message you left.” Victor frowned. “Then why didn’t you come home?” Alexander looked around the mansion before answering. “Because it wasn’t safe.” A Story Buried in Time Everyone gathered in the library. Marcus quietly closed the doors while the household staff were instructed not to disturb them. Alexander removed his coat and carefully placed an old leather journal on the table. “Twenty-six years ago,” he began, “I learned that The Circle had infiltrated far more than Kane Group. Judges, politicians, police officers, even international investors were involved.” Amara listened intently. “I wanted to expose them.” “But after Daniel Collins disappeared, I realized they already knew who I was.” “So you disappeared instead,” Adrian concluded. Alexander nodded. “I became a ghost.” Victor shook his head. “You could have trusted me.” “I wanted to.” Alexander’s expression grew heavy. “But someone close to you was feeding information to The Circle.” Adrian exchanged a quick glance with Marcus. “Another traitor?” Alexander nodded. “There always was.” An Uneasy Feeling As the conversation continued, Amara quietly studied Alexander. Something felt… unusual. He answered every question calmly. Too calmly. When Adrian asked about Daniel Collins, Alexander hesitated for the first time. “He was a brave man,” he said. “But bravery often comes at a terrible cost.” Amara noticed his eyes drift toward the fireplace. There, resting on the mantelpiece, was Daniel’s old pocket watch. For a split second, Alexander’s face tightened. Then the expression vanished. Only Amara seemed to notice. Vanessa’s Discovery Meanwhile, Vanessa had returned to Kane Group under police protection to collect the last of her personal belongings. As she packed her office, she discovered a locked drawer she had never noticed before. Inside was an old employee file. The name on the cover read: Alexander Kane Attached to the file was a handwritten note. Status: Missing. Recommendation: Never allow him to return to Kane Group. Reason: Knows the identity of the Founder. Vanessa’s heart raced. “The Founder?” She quickly took a photograph of the file with her phone. Just as she slipped it into her handbag, she heard footsteps outside. Someone was coming. She switched off the office lights and hid behind the door. The handle slowly turned. A man entered carrying a flashlight. He walked straight to the filing cabinet. Finding the drawer empty, he cursed under his breath. “Too late.” Vanessa recognized the voice. It belonged to one of Kane Group’s senior board members. He wasn’t looking for company records. He was looking for Alexander’s file. The Midnight Conversation Later that night, Adrian stood alone on the mansion’s balcony. He couldn’t sleep. The cool night breeze carried the scent of roses from the garden below. “You don’t trust me.” The voice came from behind him. Alexander. Adrian didn’t deny it. “I want to.” “But?” “You’ve been gone for thirty years.” “And now you suddenly return with answers to questions we’ve spent months chasing.” Alexander nodded thoughtfully. “Fair enough.” He reached into his coat pocket and handed Adrian a small brass key. “This belonged to your mother.” Adrian turned it over in his hand. A tiny phoenix had been engraved into the metal. “What does it open?” Alexander looked toward the east side of the estate. “The old observatory.” “I didn’t know we had one.” “Most people don’t.” He started to walk away, then stopped. Without turning around, he said quietly, “Your mother left something there.” The Watcher High on a hill overlooking Kane Mansion, a black SUV sat with its headlights switched off. Inside, a woman watched the mansion through binoculars. She lowered them slowly as Alexander entered the house. “So…” “He’s finally come out of hiding.” She picked up a satellite phone. “The family has accepted him.” A familiar distorted voice answered. “Good.” “Do we proceed?” The voice replied without hesitation. “Yes.” “The second phase begins tonight.” The woman smiled coldly. “This time…” “…Adrian Kane won’t survive.” Far below, lightning flashed across the sky as thunder rolled over the estate. Inside the mansion, Adrian looked down at the small brass key resting in his palm. He had no way of knowing… That opening the observatory would reveal a secret capable of changing everything he believed about his family. “The past leaves behind more than memories. It leaves behind the choices that shape the future.” The first rays of dawn spread across Kane Mansion. Adrian stood at his bedroom window, the small brass key still resting in his palm. He had barely slept. Alexander’s return had answered some questions, but it had raised even more. Behind him, Amara buttoned her coat and walked over. “You’re going to the observatory.” Adrian smiled faintly. “You already knew.” “I know you.” She slipped her hand into his. “And you’re not going alone.” The Hidden Path Guided by Alexander, the group walked through the eastern gardens, past rows of ancient oak trees that had stood on the estate for generations. At the end of the path, hidden beneath climbing ivy, stood a round stone building with a copper dome. “The observatory,” Alexander said quietly. “It hasn’t been opened since your mother’s death.” The iron door was covered in rust. Adrian inserted the brass key. For a moment, nothing happened. Then the old lock turned with a loud click. As the heavy door creaked open, a cool breeze swept through the room, carrying the scent of old books and cedarwood. Dust danced in the morning sunlight. The telescope still pointed toward the sky, untouched for decades. “It feels like time stopped here,” Amara whispered. Evelyn’s Final Gift The room appeared empty until Amara noticed a small wooden desk beneath the telescope. On top lay a faded notebook. Across the cover, written in elegant handwriting, were the words: For Adrian. His hands trembled as he opened it. The first page contained a letter. My dearest son, If you have found this room, it means you never gave up searching for the truth. I always believed you would be brave enough to finish what your father and I began. But remember this: the greatest victory is not exposing evil—it is refusing to become like it. A tear rolled down Adrian’s cheek. He had spent years believing his mother had simply died in an accident. Now, through her words, it felt as though she were standing beside him. A Hidden Map Tucked inside the notebook was a carefully folded map of the Kane estate. Several locations had been crossed out. Only one remained circled in red. The Old Lakeside Cottage. Alexander looked surprised. “I never knew she hid anything there.” Victor frowned. “That cottage belonged to our grandfather.” “What is it?” Amara asked. Victor sighed. “It was where the Kane family made every important decision.” Alexander studied the map carefully. “Evelyn wouldn’t have marked it unless something important was still hidden there.” A Dangerous Visitor Before anyone could leave the observatory, Marcus’s radio crackled. “Mr. Kane, we’ve got a problem.” Adrian answered immediately. “What happened?” “A black SUV just forced its way through the front gates.” “How many people?” “Four.” “They’re armed.” Marcus drew his weapon. “I’ll hold them here.” “No,” Adrian replied. “Protect the family first.” The sound of gunfire echoed across the estate. Amara instinctively stepped closer to Adrian. Alexander’s expression hardened. “They’ve found us.” The Chase Marcus led the security team toward the front of the mansion while Adrian guided everyone through a narrow passage leading out of the observatory. The hidden tunnel emerged behind the rose garden. As they hurried toward the mansion, a masked woman stepped into their path. She wore a long black coat and leather gloves. In her hand was a pistol fitted with a suppressor. “No one move.” Her voice was calm. Cold. Professional. She wasn’t here to negotiate. She raised the weapon… …not at Adrian. At Alexander. “So,” she said with a faint smile. “The ghost has finally returned.” Alexander stared at her in disbelief. “You…” “I thought you were dead.” The woman lowered her mask just enough to reveal her face. Victor gasped. “It can’t be.” Alexander’s hands slowly fell to his sides. “My daughter…” Amara looked from Alexander to the woman, unable to believe what she had heard. The woman gave a bitter laugh. “Yes.” “I’m your daughter.” “And after thirty years…” “I’ve come to finish what you started.” She tightened her finger on the trigger.
