THE SHADOW'S PULSE

1197 Words
As dawn broke over Ashwylde, Elara Voss stumbled into her loft, still feeling the pull of the crescent moon in her bones. She was haunted at every step by the docks' abandoned warehouse, whose growls and clashing silver echoed in her mind. Julian Kade had shown her a silver crescent-shaped mark on her wrist that indicated an inactive connection to his werewolf pack when she awoke. When he said, "You're tied to this more than you know," she lost her mind. As she locked the door and fell onto the couch, she mumbled something in her head. She had been reluctant to play the jumbled tape on the recorder that had been silent the previous night. Through the dim window, she could see her hazel eyes, which were still glowing from the encounter. Her human senses should not have picked up the earthy, wild scent that had entered the air. Despite the fact that her journalistic mind begged her to analyze, her body felt foreign and alive with an unfamiliar rhythm. The buzz of her phone broke the silence. Lena was prominently displayed on the display. "Elara, where is that Kade story?" Due to reports of a disturbance at the docks last night, the office is extremely busy. By 3 p.m., I have to have it. Elara's stomach tightened even more. The news cycle was already in motion. She only managed to say, "I'm working on it," but her voice was off. "Can you spare a moment?" She read, "*Meet me at the abandoned docks, midnight. -J.K.*," which was both a slur and a lifeline at the same time, after hanging up the phone and staring at Julian's envelope. She should have shown him, but the wolf's eyes and the heat of the scar prevented it. Instead, her attention was drawn to the journal he had sent her, which had wolves drawn on the pages and a worn leather cover with enigmatic writing. *The alpha gives the shadow life on a page with red ribs. If you don't, you're going to get lost. * In the room, there was a map that showed the old forest preserve. The scar's pulse had increased by midday. To give herself some breathing room, she sent a vague article to Lena with the title "Kade's Energy Venture Raises Questions." She grabbed the journal and called a taxi to the preserve, despite the taxi driver's curious looks. As she emerged, the air became thicker as the scents of pine and earth overwhelmed her senses. She continued to follow the map all the way to a clearing where Julian was waiting with the wounded midnight wolf at his side. She then reached that clearing. She used the map as a guide until she got there. "You came," he said, his voice a mix of relief and caution. The fight from the previous night's tears was hidden by his dark jacket. "I was uncertain." What exactly does that imply? As she advanced the journal, Elara demanded. Who precisely am I? He got closer, and the wolf was staring at her. "Elara, you are from the shadow's blood. Before I arrived, it was thought that your line had ended. You feel as though the mark is drawing you in. She backed off a little. "I'm a journalist, not a... monster," I declare. "You can't deny it," he said in a soft voice. The blood is receiving a new life. I'll watch out for you. A howl that pierced the heart was heard. The wolf's clench caused Julian to clench his jaw. "Hunters," he murmured. Silver-wielding, one of the three black figures leading the warehouse emerged from the trees. "Kade," he growled. "Along with the newcomers. Unless she gives up, this will be finished by us. Her progress was slowed by Julian's shift. "I look after her." Leave.” According to the headmaster, laughing. "Your bag is getting worse. Her blood takes away your life. Elara spoke with trembling voice. "Is that flesh real? What does it imply? With an emphasis on the hunters, Julian explained. "It's nothing but shadow." They want to kill us and break our link to the moon. Julian lunged at the wolf after transforming into the silver-streaked beast. As steel met claw, Elara stumbled back and unleashed a hail of violence. A hunter with an elevated weapon approached her. She ducked, her body moving unnaturally quickly, and then she released his weapon by swinging the journal. She froze in stunned silence as Julian's wolf pinned the man. The hunters were defeated and their leader fled at the conclusion of the battle. Julian turned around, exhausted and covered in blood. He said as he got closer, "You fought." "The change is happening more quickly." She shook her head and replied, "I didn't mean to." He took a seat and scrubbed his face. The first clues come from the moon's call, strength, and transformation. Before I can instruct you, you must have faith in me. “Why me?” While her wound was still burning, she inquired. He declared, "You’re the last shadow-blood." "You are essential to my survival." After the pack had killed everyone, Julian took her to a house in a cave beneath the preserve. The wolves, humans, and other members of the pack all gave the impression of being cautious as the torchlight flickered inside. His second, Mara, a silver-haired woman, got closer. "The mark is solid," she declared. "Before the two nights before the full moon, we bind it." "Can that be held?" Elara acknowledged that. "To control the change," Mara added. If you don't have it, you'll lose yourself, and the due date was getting closer. Julian led her into a room and gave her the journal. A drawing of a woman with auburn hair, a crescent-shaped scar, and a wolf next to her caught her attention. Elara thought back to the advice her grandmother had given her to pay attention to the moon's call. * The frequency of the call increased at the same rate as her heartbeat. As she fell asleep, Julian's gaze anchored her dreams of silver and wolves. She was awoken by his silhouette in the doorway. "They've tracked us," he said. "Tonight we're moving." “Where?” a hospital away from the city, she inquired. However, they will set traps. She declared, her resolve increasing, "I'm in." The ten pack members, who were armed with steel and instinct, were rallied. Elara's senses sharpened as they moved, and she was the first to notice footsteps. She exclaimed, "They're close." The ambush nabbed five hunters with flashing knives. She retaliated with a branch that she swung with such astonishment of force that she managed to avoid hitting anything. Together with Mara, Julian fought, with the pack winning and the leader fleeing. A wounded but still alive light shone through the trees as they moved on to the sanctuary. From within, she let out a raw, uncontrollable howl. In his hand, Julian held her steady. He declared, "You are now one of us." At the same time, the sanctuary served as both a haven and a battlefield. Her awakening didn't begin until the hunters came back.
