ASAEL'S P.O.V.
Maliah's grip on my hand loosen as she fell to the ground
“Maliah… Maliah!” I called out, but she wasn't listening, I shook her, but her eyes remained confused and staring at nothing.
“No,” she whispered, her voice trembling, and her head swayed from left to right, “No, no, no…”
“Maliah…" I pulled her up and she pulled herself out of my hold.
“I need to leave!” she cried out, her voice breaking. “I need to get out!” And within the blink of an eye she bolts faster than I've ever seen her.
“Maliah!” I barked as I chased after her, but she didn't turn “Stop!”
She didn't. She ran. Her shoes slip out as she darts through the trees, towards the borders. Branches broke as I followed right behind her, but she was fast, way too damn fast.
I took a turn and used a shortcut knowing where she was going and immediately yanked her leg as I slid down and pulled her from hitting the rock that I crashed my back again
“No!” she screamed, thrashing violently. “Let me go! I have to go!”
“It’s me, Maliah,” I brushed the hair out of her face trying to sound calm, “It’s Asael. Stop!”
“Let me go!” she sobbed, scratching me with her claws, but I held her still. Her eyes were bloodshot and confused with pain filled in them, it's the worst thing I've ever seen “Please! I can’t stay here. He’ll find me!”
“Maliah, stop!” I held her tighter “You’re not going anywhere. Look at me!”
Her breathing was fast and shallow as she struggled and thrashed with her legs. She was panicking, and I really didn't know what to do.
“Listen to me!” I shouted, “You’re safe. He’s not here. I’m not going to let him touch you.” She cried even louder and suddenly, everything went silent and she sobs quietly.
My heart twisted with a painful feeling as I sat both of us on the ground while holding her gently
"It’s okay,” I whispered into her hair “You’re safe. I’ve got you.”
She held onto my shirt, trembling as tears poured out, and I rocked her gently while running my hand through her hair while whispering sweet words in her ear, words I didn't even know I was capable of uttering
“It’s okay. You’re not alone. I’ve got you.”
Slowly her sob softened, and her breathing steady as she slowly released my shirt. I stared down at her as she fell into a gentle slumber but my heart ached.
What the hell did he do to her to make her like this?
I carried her back to the house while being gentle not to wake her. I laid her on the bed and pulled the cover over her to let her sleep before slipping out of the room and anger boiled within me.
“Where is he?” I growled, and my beta - Elias flinched.
"The warrior? The men took him to the cells.”
“Good, bring me a blade.”
My vision was nothing but red and the dungeon reeked with blood and sweat, but I didn't care, I stood before the man who was chained to the wall, bruised and bloody
“Your threats don’t scare me, boy,” the man rasped, his voice dark and mocking. “Alden is already on his way. You’ll regret laying a hand on me.”
"You don’t seem to understand, this isn’t about you.” the man blinked, and a smirk crossed my face, “This is about her, you think I’ll let you or your master touch her? No. I’ll kill every last one of you before that happens.”
“You can’t stop him. Alden always gets what he wants.” I sliced the blaze down his chest, completely ignoring his scream of pain.
"Then he hasn't met me again,” I growled.
After I finished I went back to their room, and she was still peacefully sleeping. I took a quick wash before sitting next to her again.
“Alpha?” Elias’s voice called softly from the doorway and I turned to see him with a foolish grin on his face which made me frown, “You look very comfortable,”
“Shut up, Elias,”
“You’ve got it bad, Asael. You’re staring at her like she’s the moon itself.”
“I said shut up,” I snapped, feeling my ear burn "What did you come here for?” His expression turned serious.
"We need to move the pack.” I stiffened.
“Now?”
“Yes. If Alden is coming, we can’t risk staying here. He’ll burn everything to the ground to find her.” he looked at her before looking back at me. “You know that better than anyone. You saw the way she panicked. We can’t let her go through that again.” my jaws tightened.
“You think I don’t know that? Start the evacuation. Use the tunnels. I’ll bring her down myself.” he nods before leaving.
Hours passed by as I rest my head against the bed
"Asael?” I raised my head up, and I held her hand softly.
“I’m here,”
“I… I had a nightmare.”
“It wasn’t a nightmare, Maliah. But I won’t let him get to you. You’re safe with me.” She looked at me like I was crazy before giving me a sad smile.
“You can’t stop him.”
“Then watch me, you just have to trust me.”
“Why are you doing this?” I stared at her for a second before smirking.
“Only I have the right to trouble you” She slapped my arm lightly and smiled “... Come on let's get you somewhere safe” She didn't argue as I lifted her up and headed towards the tunnels.
I turned left where there was less noise from the pack and a room for her to sleep more
"Stay here. I’ll make sure everything is secure.” I kissed her forehead gently, “... I'll be back” She nodded, and I left the room.
My expression changed as I walked towards where the pack was scattered and scared to death, a chill went down my spine when the lights flicker and an unfamiliar scent caught my nose but in a split second it was gone
The hair at the back of my neck rose, and my heart hammered against my chest and there's when I heard it, footsteps at the other side of the tunnel and a scream cut through the silence
Maliah
