THE SECOND DAY: 16 The President’s condition continued to deteriorate rapidly. He looked emaciated and slept most of the time. When he was awake he would alternate between periods of indifference when he seemed apathetic toward his role as President barely cognizant as to who and where he was, and periods when he demanded to conduct the affairs of the Presidency. It was during these latter periods that he sometimes scribbled his signature on official documents permitting some of the affairs of State to continue. He was unable to keep any food down and complained of tremendous headaches and shortness of breath. New lesions appeared on his back and legs. Dr. Hearon gave him injections of morphine to ease the pain. It tormented Janet to see Layton that way. He looked like a dying man. Yet
