4 Janet and Layton worked out a truce. Having political aspirations like his father and grandfather before him, Layton knew that coming out of the closet would be his death knell. A divorce would be politically damaging, also. He could conceivably overcome the repercussions, but it would mean eventually remarrying someone else to project the appropriate image. He didn’t have the desire or the energy. What Janet lacked in her breeding and education was compensated for by her attractive appearance, her outgoing nature, her natural intelligence, and her ability to learn.
