7 Once again Janet focused all of her energies on her family. She tried to forget David by plunging head first into helping Layton with his campaign. Janet finished her degree, and then took a leave of absence to travel across the State of Illinois with Layton. It was the 2004 election. Janet arrived only an hour late for the meeting but already the thick tobacco smoke floated out of the living room into the kitchen. Immediately she switched on the stove exhaust fan and opened a window.
