Once again Janet focused all of her energies on her family. She tried to forget David by plunging head first into helping Layton with his campaign. Janet finished her degree, and then took a leave of absence to travel across the State of Illinois with Layton. It was the 2004 election.
Janet arrived only an hour late for the meeting but already the thick tobacco smoke floated out of the living room into the kitchen. Immediately she switched on the stove exhaust fan and opened a window. She took off her coat to the husky sounds of male voices and laughter and heard her father-in-law say, “We put our heads together and we can win this thing.”
She entered the room, gave Layton a kiss on the cheek, sat on the arm of his easy chair and acknowledged Layton, Sr.
