chapter 18: crossing the threshold

The park walk ended at a quiet little plaza near the river, the lamps reflecting off puddles like scattered stars. Daniel had spotted a street musician and, true to form, moved ahead enthusiastically, leaving Eliana and Franklyn just behind. “Did you see that?” Daniel called back, laughing. “He thinks he’s the next big thing! I’d buy him a piano if I could!” Eliana chuckled softly, but when Daniel’s attention returned to the musician, she turned to Franklyn, her expression lighter than it had been all evening. “I like these quiet walks with you,” she said, keeping her voice low so Daniel wouldn’t hear. “I can actually… think.” Franklyn’s chest tightened. The words were innocuous, but the weight behind them was clear. “I notice,” he replied, careful to stay steady. “You notice too.” Her smile flickered, almost shy. “I suppose I do. More than I should.” The breeze carried the scent of wet asphalt and blooming flowers from nearby planters. She stepped closer, brushing past him as they navigated around a puddle. Their hands nearly touched. Just for a second, Franklyn felt the pull — magnetic and impossible to ignore. “Careful,” he muttered, more to himself than to her. She looked up at him, eyes glinting with mischief. “Careful about what?” Franklyn swallowed hard. “Careful about… temptation.” The words hung in the air. She said nothing, only tilted her head slightly, lingering in that small, charged silence. From across the plaza, Daniel waved, holding a small bouquet of wildflowers he’d bought from a vendor. “Eliana! Come see this! Aren’t they perfect?” She straightened instantly, slipping her hand into Daniel’s with practiced ease. “They are,” she said, smiling warmly, her attention on Daniel, completely unaware of the turmoil she left in Franklyn’s chest. Franklyn stepped back subtly, forcing his gaze on the ground, forcing himself to breathe. Every instinct screamed at him — close, closer, speak, stay — and yet he remained still, restrained by loyalty, by Daniel’s trust, and by the ring on Eliana’s finger glinting faintly in the lamplight. The three walked along the river path, Daniel animatedly recounting a story from his childhood, Eliana laughing at every twist, and Franklyn moving in quiet step behind, a shadow carrying a storm he could neither control nor release. And as the city lights shimmered on the wet pavement, Franklyn understood something dangerous and undeniable: the line he had vowed never to cross was fraying, and every moment spent with her, with Daniel blissfully unaware, only made the fire within him burn hotter. By the time they reached the small bridge that marked the end of the path, Franklyn knew it was only a matter of time before restraint alone would no longer be enough
