Chapter Ten

1288 Words
The contract While Lincoln and Grace are still downstairs, I wanted to go over a few things with you. I know Everett and Sharron aren’t going to back off. And I want you protected, so we brought in Grace for that. What do you mean? Grace will be your assistant but also your full-time bodyguard. She graduated at the top of her class. Oh, I really like her. I…the words got caught in her throat. She frowned, “Honey? Is everything okay?” Yes, even though she was telling me yes, you could see the sadness in her eyes. At that moment, I felt horrible. I just wanted to make sure she was safe, that she and the person who she would spend the most time with made her happy. Jade? There was a quiet knock at the door. “Come in,” Lincoln and Grace both walked in. Grace smiled at Jade. Jade looked down at the floor, never smiling or saying a word. What I thought would happen never happened. Jade completely shut down. I’m not sure what happened. Lincoln looked at me. I just shrugged my shoulders. Zander, if we are through, I’m going back home. You can send Grace to the house whenever you both are done with her. Grace frowned; she was about to say something, and Lincoln stopped her. Jade, Zander said softly, I… I just really want to go home. Lincoln, take my wife home, please. N…no… I saw our driver, Jesse, downstairs. I will get him to take me. I know you and Lincoln are very busy, I don’t; it’s okay. Lincoln, Jesse can do it. Oh, are you sure? Yes. She looks at Grace, Ms. Summers, it was nice meeting you. She smiles, but it never really reaches her eyes. I kiss Jade on the forehead. I will see you later at home. She nods her head and walks out the door. I stand there stunned. Grace watches my wife leave, then looks at both of us, like we are the most clueless men ever. She sighs, then she mutters, men are just clueless. Lincoln’s head snaps up. What do you mean men are clueless? Grace glares. If I have to tell you, then you missed the point! Lincoln stood there with his mouth wide open. Zander shook his head. Grace rolled her eyes. For these two to be so smart, how can they be so dumb? Zander knew he had missed something important. Sharron and Grace were so different. One is loving and kind, why the other used people to get what she wanted? Grace sighed, then finally said, you would have been better off just introducing us yourself. I just wanted… I started to say, then I finally understood what I just had done. She was right. I had made a huge mistake. Lincoln still looked like a deer lost in headlights. Grace grins and pats Lincoln on the shoulders. Don’t think too hard; you might end up hurting yourself. Grace laughs. Lincoln frowned. What the he** did I miss? Then he finally realized what had happened. Grace smirks. It took long enough to catch up with the class. Zander chuckles. I like her already. Lincoln frowns. Of course you do, as he gives a lopsided grin. It will take us a few hours to go over the contract. I was hoping Jade would be here for it, but I had screwed up royally. I know I need to fix it. But I’m not sure how yet. No need for all this. I trust you both. Wait, there’s not some clause in the small print I need to worry about. Is there? She smirks. Zander lifts his eyebrow, and Lincoln gives her a deadpan look. Well, that answers my question. Grace giggles. I take the pen and sign the contract. Well, that’s… that. Now I’m off to go find that pretty wife of yours to see if I can fix what you two morons did. Hey!! Well, it’s true!! Yeah, we know. Lincoln sighs in defeat. We will walk you downstairs. If you must. Zander looks at her. She’ll fit in just fine with all of us. You honestly would never know he was the same cutthroat billionaire that everyone talks about by his actions. Jades POV I know he meant well, but… sighing, I was really hoping we could become friends. Now she will be my subordinate. I can’t very well become friends with her now. Just as I was about to get in the car, someone grabs my arm. I look up and I see a smirking Everett looking down at me. Let go! You think you can yell at me now that there is no one here to defend you. I said let go of me! He pulls me closer, and I stumble with the force of the pull. Every nerve in my body is shouting out at me as I prepare to hit the ground. Suddenly, a hand reaches out and grabs me. At first, I thought it might be Zander, but it was Jesse. I got you, Mrs. Thank you, as he helps steady me and then looks at Everett. You would be wise to let Mrs. Walker go. Everett laughs. Who are you to tell me what to do? You’re no one, you’re right, Mr. St. James, but they aren’t. . Everett turns around to find four big, burly bodyguards right behind him, not realizing that Zander, Lincoln, and Grace are right behind them. I got this as Grace pushes through all of them. Everett smirks. Zander sends a woman to do his dirty work. Well, if you’re calling yourself dirty ? Then I guess he did. Everyone bursts out laughing. SHUT UP!! Everett yells. Oh, you’re one of those? You can dish it out but can’t take it, Grace smirks. I can take it just fine, as he goes to grab Jade. Grace grabs his hand and twists it behind his back, you were saying, Grace smirks. Everett was about to reply when Zander walks out of the middle of the crowd. Well, well, what do we have here? You stole my woman, Zander. Your woman, Zander chuckles. If I remember right, Sharron is your woman. And Jade is my wife. You and Sharron… you’re right, you’re right, let him go, Ms. Summer. I wouldn’t want you to make a grown man cry!! No one could really see what was happening. Because the bodyguards were blocking everything. Except for Blaze, he was across the street taking pictures. Blaze casually walks across the street and stands next to Jesse. Mr. St. James, what brings you to the Walker Towers? Everett’s head snaps up. Mr. Evans, what brings you here? I was driving by and saw all the commotion. It’s your lucky day, Mr. St. James. You could see the dread in Everett’s face. Why would you say that? Well, we wouldn’t want anyone twisting the truth, and I’m here to make sure that doesn’t happen, Blaze grins. Well, I can help you out with that, says Zander. NO, NO, it’s all a big misunderstanding, is it? If I remember right, you came here. STOP!!! PLEASE!!! I made a mistake, Everett grits out. Everett, this is the last time I’m going to tell you to stay away from my wife. Leave now before I change my mind. Everett turns running to his Porsche, gets in, and drives away. I pull Jade in my arms, are you okay? She snuggles a little closer. I’m fine, thank you, she mumbles. Silly woman, there’s no need to thank me; you’re my wife, and I will always protect you. But I do owe you an apology.
