Chapter 7: The Mirror's Secret

1044 Words
The door slammed shut with a force that made Evelyn flinch. The air in the house seemed heavier, as if the tension of the conversation with Xavier and Aunt Dorina had settled in every corner. The howl of the wolf at the edge of the forest still rang in her ears, a silent promise of danger. Evelyn stood in the living room, her chest rising and falling rapidly. “What was that?” she asked, her voice trembling. "It wasn't a random scream," Xavier said, his tone dark and indecipherable. He leaned against the wall, arms crossed, eyes narrowed at the distant noise outside. "It's a message." Evelyn's heart sank. "A message?" » From them? "Yes." Doreen stepped closer, her face pale but determined. "They're calling you, Evelyn." It's their way of saying they know where you are... and that they're waiting for you. "I can't make out Evelyn's voice, panic threatening to overwhelm her." "Why would they care about me? I'm just... "normal!" Doreen nodded slowly, the pity in her eyes making Evelyn feel even smaller. "You're not normal, Evelyn. You never existed." The wood... the mark on the shoulder... It's all connected. There's no way out. "No," Evelyn whispered, walking away. His thoughts swirled, clashing. Every time he connected, he tried to grasp the truth; it slipped through his fingers like water. "No, it must be a mistake." "You're wrong." Xavier sneered in a dry, mean tone. "Denial won't change anything." "The package has arrived, and they won't stop until you answer their call." Evelyn clenched her fists, anger bubbling beneath the surface. "Don't say 'package' like it means anything to me!" I don't even know what "answer" means." Doreen placed a soothing hand on Evelyn's arm. "It's boring, I know." But you're stronger than you think. Have confidence in yourself. “I don’t feel strong,” Evelyn whispered, pulling away. She turned toward the hallway, needing space to think—or maybe just to breathe. Her gaze fell on the large mirror hanging near the stairs. It was an antique, its gilded frame richly carved with twisted vines and flowers. She had always been there, a silent witness to years of family gatherings and quiet evenings. However, tonight things seemed different. The air around her seemed colder, heavier. A strange attraction drew her closer, even when every instinct screamed for her to stay away. "Evelyn," Dorin called softly, but Evelyn barely heard him. She was already walking towards the mirror, her boots scuffing on the parquet. The moment she stood before him, a shiver ran down her spine. Her reflection stared at her, but something seemed... off. Her face was the same: pale, wide-eyed, and frightened, but the air around her reflection seemed to glow, like waves of heat rising from the asphalt. "Why is this..." Evelyn reached out, her fingers skimming the cool surface of the glass. "Don't touch this!" Doreen's stern warning pierced the air, but it was too late. The mirror rippled like water beneath Evelyn's fingers. She pulled back and withdrew her hand, but the ripples wouldn't stop. They spread outward, distorting her reflection. "Evelyn, come back!" Xavier barked, but he couldn't move. His reflection changed. The pale face that had turned to him was no longer his own. His features began to change: his eyes turned gold, his pupils narrowed into slits. His skin darkened, and his hair grew long along his cheeks and jaw. His lips curled into a snarl, revealing sharp, gleaming teeth. "No..." Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling. He fell back as his back hit the wall. "It's not me, it's not me!" But the wolf in the mirror didn't disappear. It stared at her with its golden eyes filled with something ancient and ruthless. Then he looked, and Evelyn's heart stopped. She didn't just look at him. She studied him. "Evelyn!" Dorina's voice became furious now, and she grabbed her niece by the shoulders. "Look away!" "Don't be mistaken!" "I... I can't..." Evelyn's voice was barely a whisper, her eyes fixed on the wolf, her breathing shallow and ragged. Suddenly, the wolf lifted a paw and pressed on the window from the inside. Under the pressure, the mirror cracked, thin lines radiating from the point of contact. Evelyn screamed and pulled away, breaking the connection. As she did this, the mirror stopped. When she turned, her reflection had returned, but the c***k was there, a stark reminder of what she had just seen. “What just happened?” Evelyn asked, her voice trembling. “It wasn’t a reflection,” Doreen said, her face pale. “It was a protest.” “The wolf in you is waking up and becoming stronger. “I don’t understand,” Evelyn said, her hands gripping the locket around her neck. "Why now?" "Why is this happening to me?" Xavier took a step forward, his expression grim. "The medallion is a key, Evelyn. It unlocks the parts of you that are sleeping. And the pack knows this. That's why they call you. "But I don't want any of this!" Evelyn cried, tears streaming down her face. "I just want to be normal!" » Doreen opened her mouth to speak, but a distant scream cut her off. It was closer this time, echoing in the still night air. "I'm here," Xavier said in a low, strained voice. Evelyn's heart was beating fast as she turned to the window. The courtyard of the house was bathed in moonlight, and at the edge of the forest, she saw them. Wolves. Their eyes glowed like embers in the darkness, dozens of eyes staring at her. The largest of the wolves stood in the centre, its golden eyes fixed on her with an intensity that made his knees tremble. "What should we do?" Evelyn whispered, her voice barely audible. Dorina's grip on him tightened. "We will protect you" no matter what. As the screams grew louder, Evelyn felt the warm medallion on her chest. The mark on her shoulder began to burn, the pain spreading like flames. She gasped, clutching her shoulder as her vision grew blurry. The last thing she saw before she was summoned into darkness was the golden-eyed wolf that stepped out of the shadows and stared at her.
