Chapter 9: A Summon

Of course, she was only despairing momentarily. Her mind was so clouded that she couldn’t think clearly. She couldn’t believe that she almost relied on another person when, just as she vowed to herself, not to get attached. Even if she couldn’t kill them, she could still run away, right? What a fool she was! Iris propelled her body upward toward the higher part of the tree. Compared to Rion’s gigantic wolf form, hers was a lot smaller, but she was very nimble. She jumped from branch to branch with two enraged Giant Ape in tow, ready to smash her into pieces. Their roars were still deafening. After moving for a while, she found that she still couldn’t shake them off. So she headed toward the denser part of the woods. Their movements were slightly hindered, but they still relentlessly chased after her. “Did I kill your child or anything? What’s with this grudge?” Iris cursed under her breath, and she jumped onto a higher branch. Out of the blue, a Giant Ape already appeared. Its giant arm was ready to smash her small body, but she managed to land on a branch before it did. However, the branch swayed, and she found herself falling downward at a very fast rate. Iris’s brain spun quickly, and amidst the blur, she sought for some nearby branch that could support her body. She couldn’t find one. Closing her eyes, she prepared for an ugly fall. Yet, before she could reach the ground, her body was snatched by something. For a moment, she thought that one of the Giant Ape had caught her. She realized that she was in the mouth of a gigantic wolf, who ran rapidly and nimbly against the towering enormous trees. It was Rion. After a while, he put her down and began to speed up toward the two creatures. Iris couldn’t help but breathe out a sigh of relief. Even so, her gaze still followed Rion’s wolf’s form. From the distance, it looked like he was doing a teleport. In a few seconds, he already appeared beside one of the Giant Ape and bit down. The ape roared angrily. Rion was even more brutal as he continued to smash it with his paw, biting its body that chunks of flesh scattered everywhere. It was not long before the ape couldn’t hold against such a one-sided fight, and it stopped breathing. Rion turned his attention to the other Giant Ape who was running away and began to execute the same gruesome method of it. Iris’ breathing had calmed down a bit. She had turned back to her human form. When she opened her eyes again to assess the situation, Rion appeared beside her, sending her to shock. “Damn, I thought I was doomed.” She breathed out. “Get on.” Rion’s hoarse voice sounded from the mind-link. After a while, she still looked confused. Seeing her dumb appearance, Rion bit her collar and sent her spiraling toward the sky. Iris let out a gasp. For a moment, Rion’s craziness crossed her mind before she felt herself landing on a warm and furry body. It was very comfortable. Rion didn’t speak throughout the journey, yet she could somehow sense the traces of aggression in him. The fight earlier was indeed brutal, and it undoubtedly sparked a tinge of fear inside of her. As soon as they appeared near the residents of the pack, she obediently got off him and they walked together. There was something that had changed in the eyes of her pack. The way they looked at her with such undisguised awe, she also couldn’t help but feel a slight of pride. Let those bastards see who had saved them today! Rion glanced at her and cleared his throat. “Uh, Rion. Thank you so much for saving me.” Only then did she realize that there was another person walking beside her. “That’s only natural for mates to do so. Don’t say those words again.” Rion didn’t sound happy at all. Iris bit her lips, and she immediately agreed. “Alright.” “But I also accept other kinds of rewards…” Rion murmured. Tilting her head curiously, Iris couldn’t help but ask patiently, “What kind of rewards do you want?” Rion raised his eyebrows and then whispered something in Iris’ ear. His hot breath fanned her. “A hug is also fine.” Iris’ mouth twitched slightly, and she shook her head. She couldn’t even tell whether this man was teasing her or that he was serious. His face was unreadable. “Why shy? You just hugged me just now.” He continued. “That was different.” Iris protested, and she scowled a bit. Soon, their interaction was interrupted. The werewolves were crowded around them, with worried looks painted on their faces. Especially when Mary looked at Iris’ appearance, who looked like she had just come out of a hurricane. “Let’s go to the pack infirmary, Miss.” She glanced at Rion first for permission before she brought Iris away. Iris received the treatment from the pack doctor, hissing once in a while when the cotton touched her wounds. Impatiently, she asked the attending doctor, “Is it done?” “Miss, the Alpha is looking for you.” Someone appeared inside the room as soon as Iris uttered those words. She was about to get up from the bed when the doctor hurriedly told her, “Just a little more and it will be done, Miss.” Iris frowned, and she laid down obediently again. “Then make it quick.” Actually, her regenerative ability was a bit better than normal werewolves. However, there seemed to be some poisonous substance from the demonic ape’s touch that rendered her regenerative ability. It didn’t work as well as usual. It had probably gotten the poison substance from the plants in the herb garden. Actually, Iris also found the doctor’s treatment was a bit troublesome. Usually, she would just clean her wounds and wrapped them in a bandage. In no time, they would also heal the same way. Soon, the doctor finished. Before she could open her mouth, Iris already jumped down. In a blink of an eye, she disappeared from the infirmary. “I don’t like infirmary.” She scrunched her face. She headed toward the Alpha’s location. He had told her to meet her at his study, and she didn’t hesitate to do so. After she arrived, she knocked on the door. “Enter.” A voice came from inside. Iris wasted no more, directly walking inside. For a few years, it was the first time she went inside this room again. The Alpha turned his body, taken aback by how his daughter’s unusual appearance. She hadn’t taken a bath yet. “You can’t act like this when you arrive in their pack,” He berated. A frown marred his forehead. She just nodded and waited for him to speak. “Come here.” After she walked closer, she noticed a faint portrait on a shelf behind Alpha Arthur. The portrait was hidden by a thin cloth, which wrapped it tightly, protecting it from dust. From the outline, it seemed to be a figure of a woman. “How are you feeling?” Alpha Arthur had a complicated look on his face when he faced this daughter of his. “Just quit the pleasantries.” Iris shook her head. “I know that you also can’t stand my presence, so let’s not make things difficult for each other.” “I also want to say thank you for saving the pack…” He took something from the drawer, a small box made of mahogany wood. “Come closer,” He commanded. Iris took a few steps closer to him, and she jolted when Alpha Arthur suddenly grabbed her hand. She couldn’t help but take a step back when he took a sharp object. Before she could evade, he pierced her hand with it.
