Episode 43: A Love That Won’t Let Go

600 Words
A Late-Night Encounter The café was supposed to be closed. Bella had locked the doors, dimmed the lights, and told herself that tonight would be different. That she wouldn’t let Alex get under her skin. That she wouldn’t let the past pull her back into its orbit. And yet— She heard the knock. Soft. Insistent. Familiar. Her heart clenched as she turned toward the door, already knowing who it would be. She should ignore it. Pretend she wasn’t there. But when she took a single step forward, the pull was undeniable. She opened the door. And there he was. Alex Sinclair. Soaked from the rain, his shirt clinging to his frame, his dark eyes burning with something raw, something dangerous, something unspoken. He didn’t say anything. Neither did she. Because what was there left to say? They had fought. They had broken. They had ruined each other in ways that could never be undone. But still, he stood before her. And still—she let him in. A Dangerous Question The silence stretched between them, thick with everything they weren’t saying. Alex leaned against the counter, arms crossed, his presence filling the space like he had never really left. "You’re avoiding me," he finally said. Bella exhaled. "You make it sound like a crime." He tilted his head. "Isn’t it?" Her breath hitched. God, he was infuriating. "What do you want, Alex?" she asked, her voice quieter now. A muscle in his jaw twitched. "You," he said. Just like that. No hesitation. No doubt. Bella’s heart slammed against her ribs. "Alex—" "Tell me you don’t feel it," he interrupted, stepping closer. "Tell me you don’t look at me and remember." She swallowed. "It doesn’t matter." His lips curled into something almost sad. "Doesn’t it?" The air between them cracked like a storm. He was too close. Too close to the truth. Too close to the memories. Too close to the part of her that still ached for him. And then—he whispered it. The one thing she wasn’t ready to hear. "Do you still love me, Bella?" Her world stopped. Her pulse roared. And for the first time in years— She didn’t know how to lie. A Past That Refuses to Stay Buried Bella forced herself to step back. Distance. She needed distance. But Alex wasn’t letting her go so easily. He reached for her wrist, his grip gentle but unrelenting. "Bella," he murmured. "Answer me." She shut her eyes, shaking her head. "I can’t." His fingers tightened. "Why not?" Because if she said it— If she admitted the truth— If she let herself fall again— She didn’t know if she would survive it this time. Her voice cracked. "Because it doesn’t change anything." Alex exhaled sharply, releasing her. He ran a hand through his rain-soaked hair, frustration simmering beneath his skin. "That’s where you’re wrong," he said, voice hoarse. Bella looked away. She had to. Because if she didn’t—she would never stop looking at him. Alex sighed. "I won’t force you to say it." She swallowed hard. "But I need you to know something," he continued. "I meant what I said before." She finally looked at him, and the weight in his eyes stole the breath from her lungs. "I’ll wait for you, Bella," he whispered. A tear slipped down her cheek. She wanted to tell him not to. That it wasn’t fair. That they were nothing but a beautiful, broken mess. But the words never came. And in the silence—he had his answer. To Be Continued...
