The Ghosts of Yesterday
The café smelled of freshly brewed coffee, the scent wrapping around Bella like a memory she couldn’t escape. The soft hum of conversation filled the space, but her mind was far away.
Alex had been coming to see her every day, his presence a quiet storm on the horizon, relentless and unshakable. He never pushed, never demanded—he just waited.
And somehow, that made it worse.
Because the longer he stayed, the harder it became to pretend that her heart wasn’t screaming for him.
Tonight, the café was empty, save for one customer. Him.
Alex sat in his usual seat near the window, watching the rain trickle down the glass. His presence was a weight against her chest, an ache she had spent years trying to ignore.
She wasn’t sure who broke the silence first.
But suddenly, she was sitting across from him, a steaming cup of coffee between them, and the words she had been avoiding finally slipped free.
"Why are you really here, Alex?"
He didn’t look at her right away. Instead, he traced the rim of his cup with his fingers, deep in thought.
"You know why, Bella."
Her breath hitched.
But she shook her head. "No, I don’t. Because the Alex I knew—" Her voice cracked. "The Alex who left me—he never looked back."
His jaw tightened. "That wasn’t by choice."
Bella’s hands clenched around the cup. "Then whose choice was it?"
A bitter smile tugged at his lips. "Circumstances. Mistakes. Timing." He exhaled. "I told myself you were better off without me."
Bella flinched, his words slicing through her like an old wound reopening.
"And now?" she whispered.
His gaze lifted to hers. Raw. Unfiltered. Undeniable.
"Now, I know I was wrong."
The world outside blurred, the rain growing heavier, drumming against the windows like a warning.
She should leave.
She should walk away before it was too late.
But she didn’t.
Because the truth was—
She wasn’t sure if it had ever stopped being too late.
A Door That Should Have Stayed Closed
That night, Bella barely slept.
She tossed and turned, her mind replaying every second of that conversation, every glance Alex had given her, every unspoken promise that still hung between them.
And then—
Her phone buzzed.
A name she hadn’t expected.
Nathaniel.
Her stomach twisted as she hesitated before answering.
"Hey," she said softly.
"Hey," his voice was warm, steady. A contrast to the storm raging in her chest.
"Are you okay?" Nathaniel asked.
She wanted to lie. To say that she was fine.
But she wasn’t.
Because Alex Sinclair was back, and her heart didn’t know what to do with that.
"I—" she started, but then she heard the way Nathaniel’s breath hitched, as if he already knew.
"You saw him."
It wasn’t a question.
Bella closed her eyes. "Yes."
Silence. A long, painful pause before Nathaniel exhaled slowly. "And?"
And?
And what?
She had spent years convincing herself that Nathaniel was safe. That he was the right choice. The steady choice. The man who wouldn’t break her the way Alex had.
But now—
Now she wasn’t sure if her heart had ever truly belonged to him in the first place.
"I don’t know," she whispered.
And that was the most dangerous answer of all.
When the Past Refuses to Let Go
The next day, Bella stood outside the café, the early morning air crisp against her skin.
Her mind was a mess. Nathaniel’s voice still echoed in her ears, but it was Alex’s presence that wouldn’t leave her alone.
She had spent so long running from the past—
So why did it feel like the past was running after her now?
She didn’t have an answer.
All she knew was that she was standing at a crossroads—
And whichever path she chose—
Someone was going to get hurt.
