Episode 70: The Breaking Point

1050 Words
Bella stood by the window, staring at the city below as the tension between her heart and mind reached a boiling point. Her phone buzzed in her hand again, the name "Alex" lighting up the screen. She had seen the message a few moments ago, and yet she couldn't bring herself to open it. The weight of the decision pressing against her chest. Nathaniel had left a few hours earlier, his words echoing in her mind: "I need you to choose me." The simplicity of his request had made it feel like an ultimatum, one that she had not been ready to face. She had promised herself that she would never let love make her feel trapped again, but now, that was exactly what it felt like. Torn between the man who had always loved her and the man who once broke her heart. The years they had spent apart had changed them both. Nathaniel had been her anchor, steady and patient, loving her with a tenderness that made her feel safe. But Alex—Alex was a storm, wild and untamed, stirring a longing in her she couldn’t ignore. She had promised herself to forget him, to let go of the passion that had once consumed them. But every time she looked at him, the memories of their love—both the beautiful and the painful—came rushing back, threatening to pull her under. Could she really rebuild her life with Nathaniel, knowing that part of her heart still ached for Alex? With shaking hands, she opened the message from Alex. It was simple but piercing: “I can’t lose you again, Bella. Not after everything.” Her heart twisted in her chest. She closed her eyes and leaned against the window, feeling the tears she had been holding back for so long threatening to spill. Later that night, Bella met Nathaniel at their usual café. He was waiting for her at a corner table, his eyes lighting up when he saw her walk in. But despite his warm smile, Bella couldn’t shake the feeling that everything had changed. "How are you feeling?" Nathaniel asked gently, his hand reaching across the table to take hers. "I don’t know," Bella admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I’m torn between wanting to hold onto what we have and still feeling... something for Alex." Nathaniel’s expression softened, and he pulled his hand away, his thumb brushing over his own palm. "Bella, I understand. But you have to make a choice. You can’t keep living in the past, and you can’t keep holding onto someone who isn’t here. I’ve been by your side all this time, and I want you. I’m asking you to choose me, because I’m ready to build a future with you. But if you can’t do that, then maybe... maybe we need to let go." Bella’s breath caught in her throat. The truth of his words struck her like a blow to the chest. Nathaniel had always been clear about his feelings for her, and now, he was asking for clarity in return. "I don’t want to hurt you," she said, her voice shaking. "But I also don’t want to make a decision I’m not sure about." Nathaniel sighed, looking down at his hands. "I don’t want to pressure you, Bella. I want you to choose freely. But I need to know that you’re choosing me because you want to, not because you feel obligated." Tears welled up in her eyes, and she stood up abruptly. "I can’t... I need time. Please, I need more time to think." Nathaniel didn’t stop her as she walked out, his gaze following her retreating figure with a look of quiet resignation. Later that night, Bella found herself standing outside Alex's apartment, her heart racing as she debated whether or not to knock. The decision she had been avoiding for so long was now here. She could feel the weight of the past bearing down on her, but she knew that she couldn’t keep running from it. With a deep breath, she raised her hand and knocked. When Alex opened the door, his expression was one of quiet surprise, but there was something deeper in his eyes—a glimmer of hope. "Bella," he whispered, stepping aside to let her in. "I wasn’t expecting you." "I... I don’t know what I’m doing anymore," she admitted, her voice trembling as she entered his apartment. "I don’t know if I can make this decision. Nathaniel has given me everything, but I’m still thinking about you." Alex closed the door behind her, his gaze never leaving her. "I don’t want you to make a choice out of guilt or obligation, Bella. I want you to choose me because you want to. I’ve hurt you before, and I can never take that back, but I can prove that I’ve changed. I can prove that I’m worthy of your love." Bella felt a tear slip down her cheek as she looked at him. "I don’t know if I can love you again, Alex. I don’t know if I can trust you after everything that’s happened." Alex’s heart ached at her words, but he nodded. "I know. I know I’ve hurt you. But I swear to you, I would never hurt you again. I would spend the rest of my life making up for the mistakes I made." Bella stepped back, wrapping her arms around herself as the weight of her emotions threatened to overwhelm her. "I don’t know what to do. Nathaniel... he’s always been there for me. He’s given me a life, stability, and love. But you—" She broke off, unable to finish the sentence. How could she explain to him that part of her would always belong to him? Alex stepped closer, his voice gentle yet firm. "I’m not asking you to choose me because I need you. I’m asking you to choose me because I believe in us. Because, despite everything, I still love you. And I always will." Bella looked at him, her heart in turmoil. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to be able to walk away from Nathaniel and embrace this love again, but the fear of getting hurt once more held her back. To be continued...
