A Presence She Can’t Escape
The days after Alex’s visit were strangely suffocating.
Bella tried to drown herself in routine.
She filled coffee cups, wiped tables, and greeted customers with a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
But no matter how hard she tried to move forward, she felt it.
The weight of Alex’s gaze, the intensity of his words, the way his presence had never really left her.
And worst of all—Nathaniel noticed.
The Conversation She Can’t Avoid
That evening, as Bella was locking up, she wasn’t surprised when Nathaniel appeared outside.
She had expected this.
"Are you closing?" His voice was smooth, but she caught the slight edge of tension beneath it.
"Almost," she replied.
Nathaniel hesitated, then took a step closer.
"Can we talk?"
Bella swallowed. "Yeah."
They moved inside, the café now quiet, except for the faint hum of the espresso machine.
Nathaniel sat across from her, his gaze steady.
"You saw him again."
It wasn’t a question.
She sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Yes."
He leaned forward slightly. "And?"
Bella looked away. "I told him it was over."
Nathaniel studied her carefully. "But did you mean it?"
Her throat tightened.
Because she didn’t know.
And Nathaniel saw that.
"Bella," he said softly. "I don’t want to be the man you settle for because he’s safe."
Her head snapped up. "That’s not what this is."
A sad smile played at his lips. "Isn’t it?"
Bella opened her mouth—to deny it, to reassure him—but nothing came out.
And that silence was the answer neither of them wanted.
The Moment That Shatters Everything
Outside, Alex stood in the rain, watching through the window.
His fists clenched, his heart a mess of emotions he couldn’t untangle.
He had come to give Bella space.
To wait for her to come to him.
But now, seeing her with Nathaniel—seeing the way she leaned toward him, the way he touched her hand so effortlessly—
Alex felt something dark and dangerously close to panic.
Before he could think, before he could stop himself—he walked inside.
A Collision That Was Bound to Happen
Bella’s breath hitched the moment she saw him.
Drenched from the rain.
Eyes burning with something between desperation and fury.
Nathaniel straightened, his expression unreadable.
The air in the café shifted.
"I see you’ve moved on," Alex said, voice tight.
Bella flinched.
"Alex—"
"No." His eyes flicked to Nathaniel. "You think he can love you like I do?"
Nathaniel let out a sharp breath. "This isn’t about me, Alex. It’s about Bella."
Alex’s gaze snapped back to her.
"Then tell me," he said, voice raw. "Tell me this is what you want."
Bella hesitated.
And that hesitation nearly destroyed him.
He stepped closer, lowering his voice, pleading now.
"Don’t pretend this doesn’t still mean something."
Bella’s chest tightened. "It doesn’t matter anymore."
His jaw clenched. "Like hell it doesn’t."
Nathaniel sighed, standing up. "Bella, you don’t have to do this now."
Alex ignored him.
"Just say it," he whispered. "Say you don’t love me anymore, and I’ll leave."
Bella squeezed her eyes shut.
She opened her mouth.
But no words came out.
Alex let out a broken laugh.
"You can’t."
Tears burned at the back of her eyes.
Nathaniel sighed, rubbing his temples. "That’s enough."
Alex turned to him, something dark flickering in his gaze.
"Stay out of this, Nathaniel."
Nathaniel didn’t flinch.
"I would," he said calmly. "If she didn’t look like she was about to break in front of both of us."
That hit Alex harder than anything else.
His breath caught.
Bella let out a shaky exhale.
Nathaniel turned to her, his voice softer now.
"You don’t have to make a choice right now."
Bella’s hands trembled. "But I do, don’t I?"
Nathaniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he nodded slowly, as if he already knew how this would end.
A Goodbye That Isn’t Really Goodbye
Nathaniel stepped back, his gaze lingering on Bella.
"When you figure it out," he murmured, "you know where to find me."
Then, without another word, he walked away.
Leaving Bella standing there.
Torn.
Alex let out a breath, his hands shaking.
"This isn’t over."
Bella forced a smile—a sad, tired smile.
"It never is, is it?"
And with that—
She walked away too.
Leaving Alex alone in the café, watching her slip through his fingers again.
But this time—he wasn’t sure if she would come back.
