|Cassian's POV|
"Rafael!" I called out to my second in command and he jogged over to me from where he was standing guard near the helipad.
He too had seen the woman falling into the water with a splash and was looking at me expectantly as he waited for my order.
"Save her and bring her on board."
He was immediately on his feet, gathering men and pulling down lifeboats as I stood there, staring at the spot where that woman had fell and submerged under water.
I don't know what it was that had caused such kindness to erupt in me. I was never one to save anyone. But something about that woman's scream simply made it impossible for me to ignore her.
A myriad of conflicting thoughts and emotions overcame my body before I could even think about why I was so interested in saving this woman.
And just as I heard the motors of the lifeboat nearing the yacht again, I went over to the edge and watched as they rounded about before Rafael stepped onto the yacht with the woman in his arms.
She was wearing a pair of baby blue scrubs, like patients do, and her head was limply falling backwards because of lack of consciousness.
And as Rafael neared me, my eyes widened and I felt myself sucking in a breath when I could get a closer look at the girl.Rafael laid her down on the lounger that I had just been occupying and her strawberry blonde hair spread above her head in a halo, the sun illuminating her pale skin and
petite frame.
I let out a shaky gasp just when Rafael uttered out...
"Good gods..." he cussed, "this is Ilaria Princeton."
And damn right she was.
"She was tied to a wheelchair, Boss." Another one of my men named Zachary called out, picking up the wheelchair in his hands to show me.
And as I stared down at the woman I had been searching for all over the continent, bruised, broken and about to die, I couldn't help but ask myself, "what did they do to
you?"
————————
|Ilaria's POV|
Waves engulfed me whole, as the water filled up my lungs and the salt burned my eyes.
I could taste it on my tongue, I could feel it on my skin.
The wheelchair did not allow me to even flap my arms around, hoping to find a way to save myself. It only dragged me further and further under the surface until the light
above seemed to be getting dimmer and the air in my lungs seemed to fall short.
I couldn't breath, I couldn't swim.
And soon, my fear of deep water and darkness began to overtake my mind as my muscles locked up and my heart struggled in my chest.
My eyes opened and closed at a much slower pace and just when I saw a hand shooting out towards me, my brain shut down and I lost my consciousness.
—————
My eyelids fluttered with the movement of my irises. My mind waking up again as I remembered all of the nasty and horrible things that had happened to me.
The electric shocks.
Amber.
Falling off of a cliff.
The water approaching me.
Drowning...
"NO!" I screamed out loud, my eyes opening wide and my body sitting upright causing blood to rush instantly to my head as I clutched my temple because of the sudden wave of dizziness that just hit me.
That was when the sound of footsteps hitting linoleum floors made my back straighten as I looked up, rubbing my eyes and gaped at my surroundings.
I was sitting in the middle of a queen sized bed, with about a thousand duvets and comforters placed over my small frame and just as many pillows behind me. All in satin
and in rose gold colour.
The only light in the room was from a dim lamp at the bedside table and currently looming over me was the tall frame of a man who stood by the foot of the bed, watching
me.
My heart was once again struggling in my chest and this time I suspected that it was for entirely different reasons as he stepped around the bed and sat down, watching me intently.
"How do you feel, Ilaria?" He asked, his voice sounding like velvet to my ears as I had to resist the urge to lean backwards.
He was dressed in a white linen shirt and cream coloured chinos, his dark brown hair was in a beautiful disarray which could have only been achieved by running fingers
through his tresses. He had a strong jaw and a set of thin— and very kissable— lips.
His eyes were the same colour as cinnamon, honey, and morning dew combined— theperfect blend of moss greens with earthy browns while his physique looked to be straight out of some fashion show— broad shoulders and a broad chest, combined.
All in all, the man looked just as dangerous as he looked desirous and he was making my head swirl for all the wrong reasons.
"Who are you?" I asked, gathering my bearings enough to take note of my situation. My voice sounded hoarse and it hurt my throat to speak. "Where am I?"
The last thing I remembered was being tied to a chair by my own aunt and being pushed off of the edge of the cliff all because she wanted my shares of the Princeton
Group and killing me was the only way she could get them.
I was drowning in the ocean, panicking and then later on accepting that I was going to die this way. Then who was this man and how was I sitting here?
I sat there waiting for his reply, and trying my level best to not lose my f*****g mind.
His eyes softened slightly, reminding me of warm summer days and windy nights, as he spoke—
“I'm Cassian Evans. And I was the one who saved you from drowning in the sea.”
