The world around them had turned into a vast, incandescent white canvas where north and south had no meaning, and up and down blended together seamlessly. Frank came to a stop, squinted into the strafing snow barreling across the land and watched the fading blue of Sarah’s parka melt from view. Already the steps she’d taken before him were filling in. He clenched and unclenched his cold, stiff fingers within his gloves as gritty flakes pelted his face. Beside him, he saw the remnant of tracks in the drifts leading off in another direction. He lifted his glacier glasses and traced their path until they disappeared from view. Bowing his head, he sucked a breath, then reluctantly started ahead into the blustering whirlwind, pitying the poor souls who’d veered off the trail. Keep moving ahead
