Sarah watched Matt, Jack, and one of the Canadians ransack the shelves behind the bar. They were looking for more kerosene and anything else that might help weather the long night ahead. Above, the failing light of the kerosene lanterns flickered, stirring the deepening shadows creeping up the wood-and-plaster walls. If no more kerosene could be found, they’d be left with only their head lanterns to see in the utter darkness. Another volley of wind rammed the teahouse.
