The wedding preparations were in full swing, turning the Valentino estate into a busy hub of activity. Servants and event planners were finalizing details that Mitchell couldn’t care less about. Invitations had been sent out, the media was buzzing with excitement in anticipation of the wedding that was in less than two weeks.mitchell Valentino would be walking down the aisle toward a future she hadn’t chosen.
Mitchell stood at her bedroom balcony, watching as servants carefully trimmed the garden below,The thought of the impending union filled her chest with a heavy feeling she couldn’t shake.
She gripped the railing tightly, her knuckles turning white.she felt trapped. This marriage felt like a trap designed to keep her in line and make her a pawn in the power games between her father and Karl’s family. Her whole life she had been trying to keep control her own life, and now she was stuck and being tied to the very man she resented the most.
A knock on her bedroom door startled her, breaking the line of thoughts going on in her head. She turned to find Lucy standing in the doorway, looking concerned.
“Hey,” Lucy said softly as she stepped inside. “I thought you might need someone to talk to.”
Mitchell managed a weak smile. “You know me too well.”
Lucy, her oldest friend who truly understood the weight of Mitchell’s responsibilities, crossed the room and flopped onto the bed. “I still can't believe this is happening,it all seems like a movie,” Lucy said with a look of disbelief written all over her face. “You, Mitchell Valentino, marrying Karl Malcom? The city’s most infamous playboy? It sounds like something from a bad soap opera.”
Mitchell let out a dry laugh as she sat beside Lucy on the bed. “Trust me, it feels worse than a bad soap opera. It feels like I’m being forced into a nightmare.”
Lucy sat up and leaned forward, her tone softening. “I know you hate this, but maybe… maybe it won’t be as bad as you think. I mean, Karl’s awful, sure, but he’s not… the worst, right?”
Mitchell scoffed. “That’s a low bar, Lucy. He’s arrogant and self-centered in nature. He’ll probably cheat on me within a week of the wedding. This marriage is just a deal for him—nothing more.”
Lucy frowned at her words. “Is it really just a deal for you too?”
Mitchell hesitated. Her mind flashed back to dinner with Karl the other night. Despite everything—the coldness and resentment—there had been something else too. A feeling of something she couldn’t quite place. But that thought was quickly pushed aside; she refused to have any thoughts about Karl except as a burden in her life.
“I don’t have a choice,how I feel doesn't matter. It’s a contract, and I’m stuck with it.”
Lucy studied her for a moment before sighing. “Okay, fine. But you’re stronger than this, Mitch. If anyone can handle a marriage of convenience with Karl Malcom and come out on top, it’s you.”
Mitchell let Lucy’s words sink in. She appreciated her friend’s confidence but felt drained by this whole situation. Every day felt like a battle—against her father’s wishes, against expectations placed on her, and now against Karl.
“I just don’t know how I’m going to get through this without losing my mind,” Mitchell admitted quietly. “I hate pretending to be this perfect wife while parading around with him like we’re some happy couple.”
leaning back with crossed arms against the headboard, thinking carefully about what she said next. “Well, if you’re going to be stuck in this situation, you might as well make it hell for him.Fight back! Make it difficult for him too! If Karl thinks this is just a business deal, show him it won’t be that easy.”
Mitchell blinked at Lucy's suggestion. “Fight back?”
Lucy nodded with excitement in her eyes. “Yes! Play the game! He doesn’t expect you to stand up to him! Turn the tables on him; keep him guessing! Make sure he knows you’re not some passive wife he can control!”
Mitchell considered this idea for a moment before a slow smile crept onto her face. Lucy was right—she didn’t have to be an obedient daughter anymore! If she was forced into this marriage, she would make sure it wasn’t easy for Karl.
“He wants a perfect business arrangement? Fine,” Mitchell said with newfound strength in her voice. “But I won’t make it easy for him! If he wants to play games, he’ll find out I can play them better!”
Lucy grinned widely as she sensed Mitchell’s change in attitude. “That’s the spirit! Now we’re talking!”
Mitchell stood up from the bed with determination swirling inside her mind. She could still have control over this marriage! She would make sure Karl knew she wouldn’t bend to his will or just be an accessory on his arm! She had power too—and she would use it! The next morning, Karl arrived at the Valentino estate again under the pretense of helping finalize wedding plans. As he stepped out of his sleek black car and walked toward the grand entrance, he braced himself for another encounter with Mitchell. Their previous dinner had been icy at best; he doubted today would be any different.
When the butler ushered him into the formal sitting room, Karl found Mitchell already there sitting on a velvet sofa with an elegant posture that looked relaxed yet regal at once. She looked up from her phone as he entered; her eyes narrowed slightly as if she had been expecting him.
“Morning,” Karl said neutrally.
“Morning,” she replied coolly but politely.
Karl took a seat across from her and noticed how tense the air felt between them; this wasn’t going to be easy at all! He had hoped they could come to some kind of unspoken agreement—but it seemed like Mitchell was set on making things difficult.
Before he could speak again, Mitchell leaned forward slightly with an almost calculating smile on her lips. “So, I was thinking about our arrangement.”
Karl raised an eyebrow curiously. “Oh?”
Mitchell’s smile didn’t fade at all; it remained steady and confident instead! “Yes! Since this is purely business for both of us—I think it’s only fair we establish some ground rules!”
Karl crossed his arms thoughtfully while feeling intrigued despite himself! “Rules?”
“Exactly!” Mitchell said sweetly though there was something sharp behind those words! “For starters—let's keep our personal lives separate! You can do whatever you want when we’re not together—and I’ll do my own thing too! We only appear together when necessary for family events or public appearances.”
Karl narrowed his eyes suspiciously at that suggestion! “You don’t want us spending time together?”
Mitchell smiled wider—but there was no warmth in it at all! “I think we’ll both survive just fine without pretending to like each other! Let’s not make this harder than it has to be!”
Karl leaned back in his chair while studying her closely; so this was her plan—to keep things cold and transactional? He should’ve expected that from someone like Mitchell who had never played doting wife before!
But part of him—one he didn’t quite understand—felt irritated by what she proposed; this was his game to control—not hers! Something told him that she was testing him now—to see how he would react!
“Fine,” Karl finally said firmly without hesitation! “But I have one rule of my own!”
Mitchell tilted her head curiously now! “And what is that?”
Karl locked gazes with hers intently while feeling serious about what came next: “No matter what happens—we put on an amazing show for everyone else! In public—we’re going to look like the perfect couple—no slip-ups or scandals allowed!”
For just one moment—Mitchell's smile faltered slightly—but then quickly recovered again while looking back at him with gleaming eyes filled with challenge! “Agreed!”
They stared at each other for what felt like forever—the tension simmering between them just below surface level—it was clear: This wasn’t going to be simple business anymore!
It was war!
