MAUDE
“You are a plague!”
The first time I heard those words was when I was eight years old. After I lost my mother, I was taken into an orphanage. I practically grew there my whole life as I heard it was my mother’s dying wish.
Aunt Mara, one of the new custodians had drunk from the cup that was assigned to me alone. Immediately, she drank from the cup, she fell and died on the spot. Anastasia had a frown etched to her face as she stared at me with disgust even though she was just a few years older than i was.
“Don’t you dare call me that!” I yelled at the top of my voice before getting into a fight with her and biting her so deep into the skin. The wound began to spread with each minute that passed by and I watched the horror etched to every kid’s face as they stared at me.
A couple of minutes later, she died.
Everyone began to whisper to themselves. No one dared come close to me. but... I didn’t need to be told. I knew i was no longer wanted.
“You evil child! After all we have done for you, after taking you in when you had no one and was left to die in the woods, all you can do is bring death. It wasn’t enough that you killed Mara but now, Anastasia?! Please, leave and never return!’ Miss Patricia, the head custodian yelled and every kid right there began to cry.
And that night, I ran into the woods, not sure of where I was going, tears streaming down my cheeks. I dwelled in the wood for days and weeks, maybe months until Aunt Vanessa found me and took me in and my life was beginning to look perfect again.
I cringed at the memory of being stoned as Bernhard had ordered, till i lost my breath. What I did not understand was how I got here.
“Those metals are crafted from one of the strongest materials ever.” His voice shook me to the bones. “I have seen people struggle against them a billion times yet they all end up injured. It would be best for you to not cause any more harm to yourself.” He ordered.
“What then do you want from me?” I yelled at the top of my voice.
“Alpha Malakai” One of the guards walked into the room and went on his knees immediately.
Malakai! My heart skipped a beat.
I guess the words that flew around were actually not rumors. He was just as cold as he had been rumored to be. The moment the guards whispered some words into his ears, his eyes turned dark and stormy.
He suddenly walked out of the room, his demeanor shifting like a shadow passing over the sun. I continued to struggle to break free from the chains when I heard footsteps approaching.
When the door swung open, my breath hitched in my throat and my heart skipped a beat. I arched my brows as the woman approached me and lifted my gaze up to her face as though she was searching my face and right by her side was a maid.
“Don’t touch me in that way.” I bit my lips.
“Is this one of the new slaves?” She questioned and the maid’s lips widened into a smile while I watched on like a dummy.
“No, Luna Aziza. She was found in the pack border when Alpha Malakai went on a hunt.” He responded briskly. Luna?
“Oh, good. I believe she would be fit for the task. She has no use after all. Has a background check been run on her? I hope she is in good condition?” She probed.
I didn’t know what to say as I watched on while both of them discussed like I was not in the picture. What task? What the hell was she talking about?
“Not really. Alpha Malakai has refused for anything to be carried out on her. As usual, he does not want to force anyone to do it.”
“Hmph!” The Luna scoffed and flung her hair before proceeding towards the entry way.
“What is going on?! What do you guys want from me?!” I yelled at the top of my voice but rather than speak, they both stared at each other and let out a loud laughter and turned to leave like they had not heard what I had just said.
“I can help you!” I spoke and they both halted. The effect of my words was even more immediate than I had thought. Their heads snapped in my direction as if they had been struck. It was as if time had stopped for a second, leaving us all suspended in the air.
“I can help you...” I added and they took a few steps towards me, quite surprised. “I have heard so much about this pack and I know what this pack needs. I am willing to help you.....All I need from you both is to get me out of here and count your wishes..... granted.”
The duo looked at each other, as though wanting to be sure of what I had just said. My heart raced as I hoped and wished they would trust me this time and do my biddings. What was the point of surviving anyway? I had no reason to live.
“Do we have a deal?”
