"HELLO CALI!"  Shouting outside Los Angeles International airport, Mia Davis got off the plane feeling energize and ready to take on the world. The young twenty-six year old just got back from her three month summer vacation to Jamaica, Montego Bay enjoying a new sunny environment and experiencing a new culture. Opening up her Lyft A Ride app Mia schedule her pickup time when the driver will be arriving, while waiting outside Mia takes out her phone to text her bestie since pre-K, Jennifer Miles, Jenn for short. Informing her best friend that she is back home from Jamaica which sadly Jenn wanted to attend but two upcoming projects for her college courses was announced the same week Mia was planning the vacation trip. Jenn completely jealous over the fact she couldn’t go would always check up on her friend and inform how much she ‘hated’ her right now and hope she would come kidnap her away from school work. Jenn attends California University of Berkeley and is taking a few summer courses so she could graduate during the spring. Needing only a hundred credits to graduate. Mia was so proud of her best friend, Jennifer was only two years younger than Mia and became childhood friends since Jenn parents moved into the neighborhood when she was three years old. Thinking back on those happy memories Mia smiled a phone chimed to inform a new text message was received. As Mia observed the message she saw it was from her older sister Akira Davis. Half Japanese and half Black or in other terms African American, Akira was named after our grandfather who passed away when big sister was in mommy stomach. Their parents met in Japan when the dad went to a see the cherry blossoms. It was a couple’s vacation trip he set up with his ex-girlfriend who dumped him two days prior. If it wasn’t for her dad broken heart Mia doesn’t think that her parents would meet. Good thing it happen because now they are happily married for thirty-five years. Mia hated when people would constantly ask her about her ethnicity when she was younger, because she didn't look like the typical black girl. It didn't help that she mostly grew up going to predominate white school and being one out of four black kids including herself, Mia two older siblings Akira and Jerome. Jennifer would make four and when Jenn move from Cali to New York because of her dad job transfer it broke Mia heart and she felt in terms alone her remaining school years. It sucked even more because of the four year age gap between her siblings. They would move on to the next grade level ahead of Mia thus feeling alone in a school where no one really understood her. Feeling a tap on her shoulder when she turn around a squeal of delight came from Mia as she hug her brother Jerome. Out of her and Akira he was the oldest not to mention the only son of the family. Jerome owns an Independent Contractor, Delivery Service and has been in business for almost five years. When our grandfather passed he left an inheritance of a hundred and fifty thousand dollars and it be split among his two children. Depending on if they have children of their own they would get a cut of ten-thousand dollar. Because of their late grandfather Mia brother was able to start his business after graduating college with an Associate degree in Business Management and is working on his Bachelor’s in Finance and Marketing. “Omg, What are you doing here?” “Well my phone says to pick up a Mia Davis at LAX airport so I am assuming that is you imoto?” When they we’re young in the coming spring and mid-summer the Davis family would often vacation at their mom homeland in Kyoto. Imoto means younger sister in Japanese and was taught when old enough to talk and form sentences their mom would teach them the language.   Helping his imoto with her bags Mia got in the passenger seat and turn on her Bluetooth connecting to her brother car speakers. When Jerome got in the driver’s seat he pressed on his phone to start the apps driver’s destination. “So how was Jamaica?” Mia smiled thinking about her trip and giggled, “Do you really want to know?” “That answer lets me know to mind my business” wise choice of words brother Mia thought. Mia doesn’t know if it was just the atmosphere of Jamaica or summer vibes in general, but that trip left Mia in ecstasy. There was a beach, a tall lean muscles man that when you look at him makes you want to bite your lips. He was the definition of eye candy and Mia was a lucky woman to have met him. The days and nights she would spend wrap in his arms for those few short months. Mia phone chimed again and would you look at that a message from her walking daydream. Answering her message, texting back and forth non-stop Mia didn’t notice she was at her apartment front entrance. “This is your stop Mia and I think I should get a family cash tip benefits.” Jerome teased but Mia knows he was being very serious. Giving her brother a kiss on the cheek she smirked at him, “Drive safely, and see ya next week at mom and dad house.” Closing the door behind her Mia walks to the car trunk waiting for her brother to open it. “Hey! Where’s my tip?” “Pop the trunk Jerome!” It opens and Mia takes out her suitcase carry-on bag. Walking towards her apartment the sound of the car horn made Mia turn back to see her brother driving off sticking up the middle finger, Mia reciprocated the same action. Opening her apartment door placing bags at the front entrance, locking the door behind her, Mia walk to her bathroom and stripped off all her clothes. Having the warm water wash away sweat and plane exhaust smell, coming out in nothing but a bath towel Mia took one look at her bed and completely crashed for the rest of the day. She will take on the world another day. Two days has passed and Mia boast of energy resurfaced while getting ready for her new job as an English teacher at California High School, which was a thirty minute drive from her house. Dressed in her new black pinstriped pants suit giving her that professional appearance. Doing the finishing touch of her hair making it slick back into a ponytail Mia dab a little lip-gloss puckered up and gave her motivational speech that she does when she is felling nervous. Feeling confident she grab her car keys to her 2018 Mazda 3, heading off to work.   Arriving at the school she walked into the principle office and was introduce by her other colleagues in the teachers room where they celebrated her first day with a spread breakfast meal. Eating a bagel and egg sandwich Mia pour a cup of coffee as she was shown her appointed classroom. The scent of bleach lingered in the classroom smelling fresh and clean. The vice principal excused himself as he walked back to his office leaving Mia alone in an empty room that would soon be filled with eager to learn teens. Not just any teenagers, high school seniors. Mia could remember how she felt her senior year of high school, anxious in wanting to gain more knowledge and start her adult life. As the hours passed little by little students of all ages comes pouring in.  Her empty room was now filled in by students. Butterflies start forming in the pit of her stomach, taking a sip of coffee Mia inhaled and exhaled to try and calm her nerves. Going to the whiteboard writing an introduction of her name and topics they would go over as a first lesson. "Good morning everyone! My name is Ms. Davis I am your English teacher for your final year in high school. A little about myself I accomplish my Bachelor's degree in Education at the age of twenty-two, finished my teachers training program two years later. Moved back to California when I was offered a position as an English teacher thus here I am. I would like to begin the class with a little ice-breaker by introducing yourselves so lets start down the list, um excuse me young man it is way too early to be dozing off in class?"  Third row on the right near one of class windows face down, hoodie up so you couldn't see his face. She can tell by him sitting down he was way to small for that desk. "If you want to sleep go to the nurse office," walking towards the student she pulled down his hoodie to see his hair in dreadlocks.  "Sorry teach... I'm running on low energy." His voice was raspy yet husky it also sound familiar. Lifting his head Mia got a clear view of his face as her heart just sank to the floor in broken pieces, all she felt was dread and tears almost spilling from her eyes. "I didn't mean to dozy off... Mia?" As soon as he said her name a count down of days approaching until jail time started. Sitting in front of was her summer fling, the man she has been thinking and constantly on her mind, Aaron Black.
