Chapter Two: The Countdown

1083 Words
The Blue River pack was notorious for their ruthlessness and sheer terror they brought on the rogues. Even though our pack wasn't as big and the Blood Moon Pack or the Silver Streak, we had come a long way in the past few years thanks to the current Alpha and Luna. They were estatic and couldn't wait for their son to take over and find his mate. Us wolves could go years before discovering our mates, especially if he or she didn't reside in the current pack. Gatherings and feasts with the surrounding packs would be held in order to make the search a little easier for each wolf. Karissa wasn't particularily fond of finding her mate. As much as she wanted to be rescued from this pack, she wasn't going to rely on someone to sweep her off her feet, nor was she willing to wait that long. Rolling her shoulders back, Karissa started humming to herself as she made her way to the front door. The party was going to be big and she planned on making the most out of it.                                                                                                           As she reached for the door knob of her house, the door swung open and out stepped Richard, the Beta of our pack. Standing at about 5'9", he towered over her and by the half tucked top and the sloppy way his clothes clung to him, it was obvious as to what he was there for. His green eyes glinted as he watched her, making her uncomfortable as hell. He had the reputation of being the pack's player...right behind our very own soon to be Alpha.      "Hello Karissa. I was wondering when you were going to show up."      Before she could dodge him, Richard grabbed her by her wrists and swung her up against the wall, pinning her in between the window and him. She couldn't help but curl up her nose as his breath tickled her ear. There was a faint scent of alcohol on his breath and she flinched as he pressed himself into her and chuckeled to himself. "If you had come sooner, I would have gobbled you up instead of your sister. One day, I'll be able to have you though."     "I'm afraid that's going to have to be over my dead body, Richard. You could be the last male alive and I still wouldn't sleep with you."      "Oh? Someone is feeling a little fiesty today, are we? I would've thought by now that you'd learned not to talk back to those who are above you."      Karissa grimaced as Richard's hold on her wrists tightened. She looked around to see if anyone was around to help, but of course nobody was going to save her. She had been battling this fight for as long as she could remember. And she would be d***** if she was going to give up now. Richard's eyes glazed over which meaned someone was mind linking him and she saw this as her window of opportunity.  Lifting up her knee, she slammed it into his groin and watched as he doubled over in pain. Before he could do anything, Karissa ran inside and slammed the door shut making sure to lock it for good measures.    "F*** you Karissa! You will pay for that!"     Karissa remained quiet and listened as Richard grumbled to himself and walked away. She had already had it with being kicked in the ribs, the last thing she wanted was to get into it with the Beta. She was so focused on Richard's footsteps that she almost didn't hear Marissa come down the stairs.     "Jesus Christ, Marissa! Put some freaking clothes on will you?!"      Marissa stood in front of her wearing nothing but a pair of pink lace Victoria Secret thong. Her long chestnut hair curled down her back and she did a once over of me before turning her attention to her phone. They were twins indeed but their personalities were far beyond similar. Marissa was the outgoing of the two. She surrounded herself with people of higher status and loved to flaunt what the moon goddess gave her. Her figure was model skinny and she used that to her advantage to get what she wanted. And that was always getting her into trouble, or should I say me.      "If you don't like it so much, you could always leave you know. No one here would miss you." She stuck out her tongue and grabbed a drink from the refridgerator before heading back upstairs to do who knows what. Karissa waited until the door clicked shut before moving around the house. It wasn't much, but with their aunt and uncle out of town, it was home. She kicked off her shoes and headed towards the room in the very back. Closing the door behind her, she walked over to her unkept bed and threw herself in it. It won't be much longer until I leave, she thought to herself before falling asleep.      Little did Karissa know however, that there was a pair of eyes watching her from the treeline. They backed away and slid into the darknes. Grayson's Pov:     Grayson sat there in silence as he listened to his mother ramble on about the upcoming party and festivities she would throw for him. Knowing deep down that this was all a ruse to find him a mate and  provide grandchildren. It's not that he wasn't grateful, but knowing how his mother was, it was going to be over the top. Letting out a sigh that got a tsk from the Luna, he stood up and excused himself. He mindlinked Richard to meet up with him. His 20th birthday was coming up and he was not wanting to be around his mother as she planned.      Stepping outside, Grayson lifted a hand to shield his eyes away from the late afternoon sun. Summer was never forgiving in Georgia this time of the year and the humidity only made matters worse. The only good thing about the summers were the fireflies that swam through the trees at night. As girly as that sounded, he adored watching them as a kid and now that he was an adult, it helped him clear his head.      As he decended down the stairs, he watched and a disheveled Richard made his way to him. His hair was a complete mess and his clothes were wrinkly. Richard made eye contact with him and grinned but immediately froze as he saw Grayson's eyes go black.
