CHAPTER ONE

THE HEIR Rain poured heavily over the Vale mansion that night. Eight-year-old Sebastian stood at the top of the staircase staring at the crowd of adults gathered downstairs. Something was wrong. He could feel it even though nobody had told him anything. His grandfather stood near the entrance still wearing his suit. His face looked different. Tired. Broken. “Grandpa?" The old man looked up. For a moment he stared at the boy. Then he opened his arms. Sebastian ran down the stairs. Threw himself into his grandfather’s embrace. “Where are Mommy and Daddy?" he asked. His grandfather froze. Sebastian pulled away. Looked into his face. “Why isn’t Daddy here? He promised he would come home." His grandfather struggled to speak. “Sebastian…" “Where are they?" The old man knelt in front of him. Held his shoulders. “Your parents are gone." Sebastian frowned. “Gone where?" His grandfather’s eyes filled with tears. “They’re not coming back." The boy stared at him. Then he began shaking his head. “No." “I’m sorry my boy." “No! I want my mummy!" His grandfather pulled him close as Sebastian cried against his chest. “I want Daddy!" “I know." “Tell them to come " His grandfather closed his eyes. “I wish I could." That night Sebastian lost his parents. He still had one person who refused to leave him behind. His grandfather. ⸻ Years passed. The little boy who had once cried for his parents slowly grew into a determined young man. His grandfather raised him with love. He also taught him that life would not always be kind. “You were born into wealth " his grandfather often told him ". Never allow wealth to decide the kind of person you become." Sebastian listened carefully. By the time he was eighteen, he had already started learning about the family business. Vale Industries was one of the companies in the city and his grandfather had built it from almost nothing. Sebastian spent hours in his grandfather’s study reading reports. Asking questions. “You don’t have to carry the company " his grandfather told him one evening. Sebastian looked up. “I want to learn." “Why?" “Because you built it." His grandfather smiled. “. " “I want to protect it." The old man studied him for a moment. “You sound like your father." Sebastian lowered his eyes. He rarely liked talking about his parents. His grandfather. Didn’t push him. Instead, he placed a hand on Sebastian’s shoulder. “You don’t have to become anyone. Just become a man." Sebastian smiled. “I’ll try." ⸻ Not everyone in the family shared his grandfather’s affection for him. His uncle, Vincent had always believed that Vale Industries would eventually become his. He was the man’s son. He had worked in the company for years. He believed he deserved the position. Then came the announcement that destroyed his expectations. The entire family gathered in the mansion one evening. Sebastian sat quietly beside his grandfather while Vincent and his wife, Veronica sat opposite them. The old man cleared his throat. “I have made my decision about the future of the company." Vincent leaned forward. His father looked at Sebastian. “Sebastian will become the CEO of Vale Industries." Silence filled the room. Vincent slowly stood. “Father what did you just say?" “You heard me." “You’re giving the company to him?" “Yes." Vincent laughed bitterly. “I’m your son." “. Sebastian is my grandson." “I’ve spent years working for you!" “. Sebastian has spent years learning from me." “He’s twenty-one!" His grandfather’s expression remained calm. “. Yet he is ready." Vincent’s face hardened. “You’ve always favoured him." “That’s enough." “No " Vincent snapped. "You never gave me a chance." His grandfather stood. “I gave you chances." Vincent stared at him. “. You chose him?" “I chose the person I believe can protect what I built." Sebastian finally spoke. “Uncle I never asked for this." Vincent looked at him coldly. “. You accepted it." Sebastian had no answer. Veronica touched her husband’s arm. “Let’s go." Vincent walked toward the door. Before leaving he turned around. Looked at Sebastian. There was anger in his eyes. Not ordinary anger. Something deeper Something Sebastian would remember for years. ⸻ Sebastian became CEO at twenty-one. At first, people doubted him. They believed he was simply a heir who had been handed everything. Sebastian didn’t defend himself. He worked. He arrived before everyone and stayed long after the offices emptied. He learned every department. He studied every report. He listened to his employees. Slowly the doubts disappeared. Sebastian became known as a CEO who was strict but fair. Despite his success, there was one person he still depended on. His grandfather. Whenever Sebastian faced a decision he went to him. Whenever work became overwhelming they sat together in the study. One evening Sebastian placed a pile of documents on the desk. “I think I’m doing much." His grandfather laughed. “Finally, you admit it.” Sebastian smiled. “You’re enjoying this.” “Of course." They laughed together. Then his grandfather became quiet. “Sebastian." “Yes?" “Whatever happens never allows money to become more important than people." Sebastian looked at him. “Why are you saying that?" “Because one day you’ll understand." Sebastian smiled. “As long as you’re around I’ll be fine." His grandfather reached across the desk. Held his hand. “I’ll always be here." Neither of them knew those would become some of Sebastian’s painful words to remember. ⸻ Three weeks later Sebastian received a call early in the morning. It was his secretary. “Sir you need to come to the hospital." Sebastian immediately sat up. "Why?" There was hesitation. “It’s your grandfather." Sebastian’s heart sank. “What happened?" “Please come quickly." He didn’t ask another question. He rushed to the hospital. When he arrived he saw Vincent standing in the corridor. Sebastian hurried toward him. “Where’s Grandpa?" Vincent lowered his eyes. “Sebastian…" “Where is he?" His uncle looked at him. “He’s gone." Sebastian froze. “No." “I’m sorry." “No." He pushed past Vincent. Stared through the hospital doors. The man who had raised him was gone. His protector. His teacher. His only parent. Gone. Sebastian sank into a chair unable to process the words. For days he barely spoke. After the funeral, he returned to the mansion. Entered his grandfather’s study. Everything was where he had left it. The books. The desk. The old photographs. Sebastian picked up a picture of himself as a child sitting beside his grandfather. Tears filled his eyes. “You promised me." His voice broke. “You said you’d always be here." He placed the photograph down. Behind him, Vincent appeared. “You need to return to the company." Sebastian turned. “I can’t." “You’re the CEO." “I don’t care." “You have responsibilities." Sebastian looked at him. “I just lost my grandfather." Vincent said nothing. Sebastian walked past him. “I need to leave." The next morning he did. He drove until the city disappeared behind him. Eventually he reached the beach—the place his grandfather had taken him when he was a child. The sea was calm. The wind was cool. Sebastian sat alone on the sand. Stared at the horizon. For the first time in years, he wasn’t a CEO. He wasn’t an heir. He was simply a grandson mourning the man who had ever made him feel safe. He closed his eyes. “I miss you, Grandpa." The waves crashed softly against the shore. Sebastian didn’t know that this journey away, from everything would lead him directly toward someone who would change his life. A girl named Hilary. He certainly didn’t know that their story had begun long before either of them remembered.
