A New Alpha

As I slowly regained consciousness, bright white light shined into my eyes. I could hear the shuffling of footsteps and the air was thick with the smell of antiseptic. My mind immediately registered that I was in the Hospital. My gaze slowly takes in the interior of the room. It was a private room. My body felt weak as I sat up and my brain started running a million miles with questions. Who brought me here? How rich were they to put me in a private room? And where did they go? A nurse walks, she looks like she's in her late thirties, older than me. "You're awake!" she says enthusiastically. "Why am I here? who brought me here?" I asked. A tiny part of me hopes she'd say Kael did. "you don't remember?" she answered my question with a question. All I remember was Kael rejecting me as his mate, Celeste triumph and Nyra disappearing. Oh no, Nyra! "M..my wolf.. how is she?" I asked the nurse. She looked at me with something I couldn't place a finger on, Guilt? perhaps...Pity? Fear gnaws in my chest at the thought of losing Nyra. The nurse checks my vitals and adjusts the bed. "It's best if the doctor breaks the news to you about your condition", She replies after a while. My condition? what's this about? is something wrong with Nyra? "Nurse please just..." I try, desperation creeping into my voice. The nurse doesn't answer me, she writes something down before leaving, closing the door behind her and leaving me with questions unanswered. I fall back into the cold hospital bed, I can't feel Nyra, can't hear her. Something was wrong. Later that day, nothing has changed, the room still reeks of antiseptic and the hospital noise was the same. I play with my fingers, my mind occasionally calling out for Nyra. If she were around, I wouldn't be bored. I sigh lazily and sit up, ready to leave when someone walks in. The air in the room suddenly dropped lower. My eyes take in the sight of the man before me, I had seen him before. He's an Alpha. Known to be Kael's mortal enemy. I've seen him at conferences, meeting and in important events and in all he and Kael never ended well. Was he the one who brought me here? If yes then why? My eyes scan him again. His shoulders were broader than Kael's. His hair was perfectly styled, no loose strand. And his eyes...his obsidian eyes stared into mine. His features scream Power, control and elegance all at once. "Are you done ogling me up?" He breaks the silence. His voice was a deep baritone —deeper than Kael's and it sends a cold shiver down my spine. I felt heat creep up my face at his question. "What...I.. I'm not staring", I blurt, even to myself I don't sound believable. He grins smugly,"sure you weren't". Just then the doctor walks in along with the nurse from earlier,"Alpha Sylas", he greets the man now standing beside me. I never knew his name, well, I've never interacted with him before. The doctor's words brought my attention back,"Ma'am Rosalind...". Rosalind? ah, I guess I'm no Luna anymore. "Alpha Sylas brought you here yesterday and we've conducted a few tests", he continued to rant on about hospital things. I looked at Alpha Sylas, why was he helping me? He knows about my relationship —well ex relationship with Kael, so why? My thoughts were sharply interrupted by the doctor's next word. "I'm afraid your wolf is isolating herself", "what?" I asked,"Nyra wouldn't do that", I say, trying to convince myself more than the doctor. "well have you heard from her?" "No, but...", but I did feel her retreat yesterday. I look at the doctor, my voice shaken,"why? why is she hiding?", the doctor looks at Alpha Sylas as if waiting for permission to speak. I look at the alpha beside me then at the doctor. The doctor spoke after a nod from Alpha Sylas. "she was deprived of love from her mate and when your mate rejected and broke the bond, she must've felt unlovable, that's why she retreated", the doctor explains. I felt my chest tightened and my breathing became shallow. Before the doctor could reach me, arms wrapped around me —like the ones from yesterday. As my breathing stabilised, I realised it was Alpha Sylas holding me. I tried to pull away from him but his grip only tightened. "Easy there, little wolf", he whispered, his breath brushing the back of my ear making me jolt in surprise. And little wolf? A nickname? but surprisingly i didn't dislike it. The doctor smiled and continued,"We can bring her back but that'll mean...", he paused, his lips pressing into a thin line."What doctor? I'll do anything to have Nyra back".
