Allaine fed the children and took them to the sitting room to watch TV. Nicky hugged Emma around the stomach, believing her tale that Rohan was called away to work. As her friend led him from the kitchen, Emma saw the doubt in his eyes and he kicked up a fuss, insisting he wanted to show her his homework.
“I’ll come soon, baby,” she promised. “We’ll have a cuddle; I’ve missed you so much.” She gave him a reassuring smile and waved as Allaine closed the door behind them.
