Elias no longer cared whether his memories were real.
He had seen enough versions to know that reality was unstable.
The question was why.
For twenty hours, he and Mara worked without leaving the observatory.
They examined every signal from AEON-13.
They compared gravitational readings from each continuity.
They reconstructed the movements of stars that had shifted during previous resets.
A pattern emerged.
The changes were not random.
They formed an equation.
Elias covered the observatory wall with numbers.
Mara watched him.
"You're saying the universe is calculating something."
"Yes."
"What?"
"Survival."
He circled three equations.
"The Continuity Engine isn't destroying universes randomly. It's searching."
"For what?"
"A stable reality."
Mara frowned.
"Stable enough for what?"
Elias didn't answer immediately.
He remembered Adrian Vale's words.
Humanity had built the machine.
Humanity was trying to escape something.
Then Elias found the missing piece.
The universe was approaching a state of maximum entropy.
The distant future was unimaginably cold.
Stars would eventually disappear.
Galaxies would separate.
Energy differences would flatten.
Life would become impossible.
Humanity's descendants had discovered a theoretical escape.
They called it Continuity Migration.
Instead of surviving the death of their own universe, they would move into another.
But there was a problem.
A universe couldn't simply be entered.
Its laws resisted foreign matter.
The Continuity Engine solved that problem by gradually merging realities.
The resets were not accidents.
They were experiments.
Each cycle tested whether two realities could coexist.
Most failed.
When a version failed, it was discarded.
Mara stared at the equations.
"You're telling me someone is testing universes?"
"Yes."
"How many?"
Elias looked at the data.
"Millions."
She became silent.
Then she asked:
"And we're one of them?"
Elias nodded.
The door opened.
A government security team entered.
Commander Sera Malik walked at the front.
She carried no weapon in her hands, but Elias recognized the authority in her posture.
"Dr. Vey," she said.
"Commander."
"You need to come with us."
"No."
She stopped.
"That wasn't a request."
Elias looked at Mara.
The commander continued.
"We have been monitoring the anomaly."
"Then you know what is happening."
"We know enough."
"Do you know about AEON-13?"
Malik's expression changed.
"Yes."
"Do you know about the Continuity Engine?"
Silence.
Elias realized she knew more than she was admitting.
"You've been hiding this."
"We've been protecting humanity."
"From what?"
"From the truth."
Elias stepped toward her.
"How many resets have you witnessed?"
Malik didn't answer.
Mara whispered:
"Commander?"
Malik looked at her.
"Eleven."
Elias felt anger rising.
"You knew."
"We knew the world had changed."
"You knew people were being erased."
Malik's face hardened.
"We knew something was happening. We didn't know how to stop it."
She handed Elias a data tablet.
A single file was open.
PROJECT ORIGIN.
Inside was a recording.
A woman appeared.
She looked exactly like Mara.
Elias stared.
The woman in the recording said:
"My name is Dr. Mara Chen. If you're watching this, the experiment has reached Version 13."
Mara dropped the tablet.
"No."
The recording continued.
"I created the Continuity Engine."
Elias looked at the real Mara.
She was shaking her head.
"I don't remember."
The woman in the recording continued.
"Do not trust Elias."
The video ended.
Silence filled the room.
Elias turned slowly toward Mara.
She looked at him.
"I swear I don't remember."
The observatory clock began counting down.
13:00
Elias stared at the screen.
The final reset had begun.
Then the main telescope moved by itself.
It pointed toward the black star.
A message appeared.
SOURCE IDENTIFIED.
Elias read the next line.
His blood turned cold.
SOURCE: EARTH.
