Chapter 2: Chapter Two: You Must Take Responsibility for Me
The large bed in the master bedroom shook for half the night, finally settling down just before dawn.
The next morning.
Lena Roxanne was still a bit dazed when she first woke up, habitually throwing off the blanket and getting ready to get out of bed. It wasn't until she saw the mottled, intimate red marks all over her body that it hit her.
Damn! She remembered now.
Yesterday, she had run into a scoundrel!
Just then, there were two knocks on the door, followed by it opening.
Lena Roxanne only had time to wrap herself back in the blanket, leaving just her head exposed.
Seeing who had come in, the girl froze.
The man from yesterday was sitting in a wheelchair, his face somewhat pale but still incredibly handsome.
No, the real question was, how dare he show his face in front of her? Wasn't he afraid she would beat him to death?
"You..."
"Put some clothes on first. We'll talk outside."
Before Lena Roxanne could say anything, the man waved his hand, and someone brought in several gift boxes. He then turned and left.
When Lena Roxanne came out and opened the door, the man sitting at the coffee table lit up.
The girl's long, slightly curly hair and the C family haute couture she wore made her look stunning even without makeup.
She walked over and sat down on the sofa opposite the man.
The man introduced himself as Emmanuel Wright.
"I'm sorry. I was drugged yesterday, which is why I acted so rashly. Here is a marriage agreement. You're still young; we can get the official certificate in a couple of years. Also, if there's anything else you want, I can compensate you for it."
After having her background checked, he found out that she was only eighteen and that it was her first time experiencing something like this. She must have been terrified yesterday.
For the first time, Emmanuel Wright's usually cold heart softened a bit.
Thinking about it, his eyes hardened again.
Those people had chased him here, really thinking he was done for, huh?
He couldn't wait to see their faces when they found out he had married a girl with no background.
Lena Roxanne was taken aback. "Are you joking?"
"I'm serious," the man said solemnly, then added, "Or are you unwilling?"
True, who would want to marry a man in a wheelchair?
With this thought, the slight softness in his heart was once again encased in ice.
"Forget it. I'll give you some money. Name your price."
The man's expression turned cold again, and the fleeting tenderness seemed to be just an illusion to Lena Roxanne.
"Wait, I'm just a bit overwhelmed."
Lena Roxanne thought seriously. Better to take control of her own fate than be sold off. Besides, for Mama Dean... Well, the uncle was so handsome; this deal wasn't bad at all!
"Okay, I'll marry you!"
Lena Roxanne took the marriage agreement and quickly signed her name.
"But there's one more thing."
At this, the girl frowned slightly, showing her distaste.
"Your arranged marriage partner? Don't worry, I'll handle it."
The man spoke lightly, as if the other person was just an insignificant ant.
"Uncle, how did you know?"
Lena Roxanne was shocked.
Uncle?
Emmanuel Wright choked. No one had ever called him that before.
Of course, he had thoroughly investigated Lena Roxanne before making this decision. As someone who almost controlled the entire economy of the northern part of the city, even though he was here recuperating from a strange poison, many people were still watching him, so he had to be cautious.
Emmanuel Wright gazed at Lena Roxanne. "I want to know everything about you, my little wife."
Lena Roxanne felt a bit uncomfortable under his gaze and shifted her eyes away.
"By the way, Uncle, can we keep our relationship a secret until after I graduate? Getting married while still in college seems a bit odd."
She didn't want to be the center of attention.
"Alright."
Emmanuel Wright nodded slightly and handed her a card.
"There's ten million in here for your spending. If it's not enough, let me know."
...
When Emmanuel Wright's people dropped her off at home, Lena Roxanne saw her parents sitting on the sofa as soon as she entered. They immediately put on accusatory faces upon seeing her.
"Lena Roxanne, aren't you independent now? Why come back?"
Orlando Roxanne slammed his teacup on the table, shouting angrily at her.
Lena Roxanne took out a card she had just deposited and tossed it onto the coffee table.
"There's a million in here. The password is six zeros. I've paid back the money I borrowed from you. From now on, I will decide my own marriage."
The orphanage director who raised Lena Roxanne had terminal cancer. To pay for her treatment, Lena Roxanne borrowed a million from her family and wrote an IOU, planning to repay it as soon as she could earn the money.
Unexpectedly, the Roxanne family used this to force her to go on blind dates, saying that if it led to an investment, she wouldn't have to repay the money.
Song Meixin was stunned, then quickly regained her composure.
"Where did you get this money? Did you do something illegal? Don't drag us down with you!"
Lena Roxanne sneered. "Don't worry. I just got lucky and won the lottery. Looks like it scared you quite a bit."
The two were speechless, their mouths wide open.
Without wasting any more words on them, Lena Roxanne returned to her small room in the Jiang household, a cramped servant's quarters. Next to it was the laundry room, where the washing machine hummed non-stop.
Meanwhile, Grace Roxanne lived in the main bedroom on the third floor, which also had a study, a gym, and a music room, yet there wasn't a single spare room for Lena Roxanne.
Grace Roxanne spent her days asking her mother to buy her things, while Lena Roxanne had to pay for her own tuition.
Even the servants knew who to curry favor with.
Sure enough, in this world, being kind only invites bullying because others see kindness as weakness.
...
During dinner, no one mentioned what happened yesterday.
"Ah." Orlando Roxanne sighed deeply.
"What's wrong?" Song Meixin asked with concern.
"Gary told me that the heir of the Wright family from the capital has come to Riverside City. If the Roxanne family could collaborate with him, we wouldn't have to kowtow to Arvin Nixon anymore!"
Hearing him mention the Wright family, Lena Roxanne perked up a bit.
"Dad, is it the Wright family that opened a branch in Riverside City?"
Grace Roxanne looked thoughtful.
"Yes, does Shiluo know about it?" Orlando Roxanne showed interest.
"I have a friend whose family might be working with the Wright family. Should I ask him tomorrow?"
Grace Roxanne spoke confidently, as if the deal was already done.
"Good, good, good. Shiluo, you're such a good daughter, already helping Dad with his worries."
Orlando Roxanne couldn't stop smiling.
Pfft, what friend? Clearly, one of Grace Roxanne's backup options.
Lena Roxanne sneered.
"What are you laughing at, Lena Roxanne? Look at your sister, then look at yourself. You're always causing trouble and never doing anything useful!"
Orlando Roxanne turned to yell at Lena Roxanne.
Seeing Lena Roxanne being scolded, Grace Roxanne felt elated and even ate two more bowls of rice!
She even pretended to console, "Dad, don't be angry. It's not her fault that she doesn't know anything."
"Hmph, useless! Can't you learn from your sister?"
Indeed, Orlando Roxanne became angrier the more she tried to soothe him, while Song Meixin just smiled at Grace Roxanne, not saying a word in defense of Lena Roxanne.
