Nyra's POV
For a moment I forgot to breath. My body stilled. My heart pounded weirdly against my rib cage, my eyes bulging in shock.
No!
This couldn’t be real.
There's no way my father would pair me with a vampire. They killed my mother. They destroyed our pack years back, slaughtered our people. They were disaster. There was no way!
My chest arched as I screamed inwardly.
“No, father. That can't be true—" I denied, shaking my head.
“What do you mean by it can't be true?" my stepmother cut in, stepping forward. And as usual, hatred burned openly in her eyes. “You aren’t daring to challenge your father’s decision, are you?”She accused, raising an brow.
“She dare not!" My father snapped. “Or I’ll disown her and banish her from the pack.” He glared at me.
I froze. My fingers clenched the fabric of my dress as rage and panic flooded me at once, my body trembling despite my effort to stand firm.
“By tomorrow morning, I expect everything to be settled." The vampire king said calmly. His voice carried authority that demanded obedience. “I want every paper signed and necessary things done. She comes with me."
“Understood,” my father replied immediately, nodding firmly. “Don't worry about a thing. Everything will be ready before your departure tomorrow."
The words struck harder than any blow.
This was the first time I had ever seen my father acting so obedient to another powerful being. I had always seen him as someone fearless and strong.
I wondered what influence the vampire king had on him that would make him so obedient.
Was he coerced into giving me up?
Or had he simply chosen to give me away?
Either way, vampires were vicious beings, capable of anything.
“I hope you enjoy your stay in our pack, Lord Nickolas,” my father said, bowing slightly.
“She may be stubborn,” my stepmother added coldly, “but please ignore her attitude.”
Then she and my father walked away..
The urge to chase after them and demand answer from my father burned fiercely in me. And just as I took a step forward, my step sister, stepped into my way, blocking me.
“I hope you enjoy the night with your new man, sister." She said, her voice laced with mockery and false sweetness.
The corner of her lips twitched up to a mocking smirk before she turned and walked away.
The moment I saw that she's out of my way, I tried to walk away to locate my father when he grabbed my wrist, his hand firmed around my wrist. The sudden coldness of his skin made me swallowed swiftly down. My breath caught in my throat.
“Where do you think you are going?" He demanded, his voice devoid of warmth. “We aren't finished."
Adrenaline rushed through my body. My skin flushed as a wave of rage and strange feelings surged through me. My stomach churned and my face distorted with anger.
“We have nothing to discuss." I retorted, wanting to jerk my hand free from his grasp but he's so strong. And no matter how much I tried, I couldn't escape from him.
With a sharp tug, he pulled me into him. My heart raced violently as I collided with his chest. My pulse raced. I shoved him, but it was useless, he wouldn't budge. He stood immovable, like mountain.
“I hear you’re stubborn, but don't push me to my limit,” he murmured, pulling me closer. He pressed me to his body, and I felt my wolf purring at his touch. “I'm a short-tempered man, don't do anything stupid to make you hate me forever." He warned, his voice sending a shiver down my spine.
Though he might sound scary, but I was not someone who bow or feel scared easily. I didn't care if he's the most feared man in the world. There's no way I would allow him to control me. And there's no way I would allow anyone to have control over my fate.
Not even my father.
I was never going to marry him.
“I will never marry you. Over my dead body!" I spat, gritting my teeth in anger.
My brows raised slightly when I saw him smirked, one that spoke of danger. “Who told you I'm marrying you?" He questioned. His eyes glinted in amusement that sent a jolt of anxiety through me, wondering what he's talking about. “I owe you. I'm the vampire king. I don’t marry out of obligation. You are now one of my pets. My possession, and you must do anything I order you to do." He added, his lips spreading into a devil grin that made me swallowed hard down.
An instant fear gripped me by the throat and immediately I shoved him away. But this time I was successful. He staggered backward slightly, making me free from his hold.
“Dream on. I would rather rot in dungeon than being one of your slaves." I spat, glaring at him before walking away, trying to locate my father.
I had to convince him to cancel whatever agreement between them. There was no way I was going with that man.
****
I stormed into my father's study room. Heat flushing through my veins, my body shuddering with anger that I felt toward him for signing me off to such a cruel being.
“Now, have you lost all manners? How dare you barge in here like that?" He scolded, anger evident in his voice.
“I'm never going to marry him, and that's final." I said, my chest heaving with determination.
“What did you just say?" He demanded fiercely, his expression darkened as he stood from the chair. “I should've known that you are such a selfish girl. Don't you care about what happens to the pack? Our home?" He questioned, his eyes blazing with anger. “We signed a peaceful treaty with them, to give them what they want in return for the protection of hundreds of people in the pack. Yet you only cared about yourself. About your hatred."
My heart arched when I heard that I was the payment for the peace.
It's no wonder that no pack would dare go against the vampire kingdom, they would rather sign a peace treaty with them than to go a war with them. But still, he shouldn't have used me.
Didn't he care about me?
“Don't you care about what they did to mother. How they brutally murdered her."
“That's the past. Nothing good will come out of dwelling on it." My heart shattered at his comment.
It wasn't that I was surprised by his words. He never for once acted like he cared about what happened to mother. But saying it without a slight emotion made it hurt more.
“Like I said, I'm not going to be one of his slaves. I will look for my mate, find him and get away from the pack." I promised, wanting to leave the room, but stopped when I heard him.
“Don't be a fool, Nyra. You don't have any mate." He announced and my body went rigid. I turned back to him, taken aback by his words. “Your mother and I found out years back. You don't have a mate. You are a matelsss wolf. You should thank me for setting you up with someone. So use this opportunity to get a man." He added and I became lost in thought.
How could such thing happened?
Why would the Moon Goddess abandon me?
Why bind me to a monster?
What sin had I committed to deserve this fate?
And why… why did it have to be him?
