Chapter 3

Nikolas's POV I felt that my dream is about to come true. That my hunt was finally ending. I had searched for a girl with a special bloodline for centuries. Until I met her sixteen years ago, during the war between vampires and werewolves. And ever since that day, I had secretly looked over her, watched her in shadow as she grew up. Now, I finally had her within my grasp. Nyra. The elder daughter of the alpha of Crystal Moon pack. The one whose blood could cure the curse that had tormented me for centuries. For centuries I had been battling with a curse called Singler. A sickness of madness. Once every month, it stripped me of control, turning me into a beast that slaughtered its own kind. A king who could not trust himself was a danger to his people. And she was the cure. Yet something about her unsettled me. She looked… fragile. Too small. Too quiet. Nothing like the fierce she-wolves I had known. I had imagined someone powerful—unyielding. Not this soft-boned creature with sorrow carved into her eyes. Maybe I was wrong about her. “Are you certain about this?" A familiar voice said behind me. And I didn't need to turn to find out who it was. It's Draven. My second in command. “About what?" I demanded, turning to him. “Certain about taking such a young weak girl like her as your bride." He said and my jaw tighened. Hearing him made my stomach churned with anger. “She's not my bride." I snapped, turning to face him and glaring at him. “ And she will never be. I'm a vampire king. The strongest vampire ever lived. I don't belong to anyone. And I will never allow any woman have control over me." I groaned, anger flaring within me. “She's just my pet. My toy. The one which I will toss away when I'm done with it. It's just by time." Draven studied me carefully. “If she’s just a tool, why risk everything to strike a deal with the Alpha?” He demanded, his words flaring the anger in me. “You know the reason, Draven." I growled. “She's the key to break the curse. I must do everything to make sure that I get my hands on her." He nodded. “But are you sure it’s her? She looks ordinary. Weak. Not anything special. Just an ordinay girl with a sad story. She's like a broken toy." He said, shaking his head, a pitiful movement. “I doubt she's the one. Maybe it's another girl you saw that night, Nickolas. It might not be her. She's too ordinary." He said, making me sigh worriedly. I could understand what he's talking about. I had the same feeling. The same doubtness. Maybe it's another girl I had seen that night. Or Maybe I was mistaken. Suddenly, a familiar scent hit my nose. The same rosy scent that made something strange shifted within me. The one that's capable of awaking the monster inside me. Nyra. My eyes flashed red as instinct surged through me. I turned—and saw her storming away, shoulders slumped, pain etched into her face. Something wasn't right. I could sense it. My brows pulled up in a mix of confusion and curiosity. And I felt a urge to follow her and find out what's wrong with her. “Where are you going?" Draven demanded as I left him, trailing her. “To check if everything is alright." I answered without stopping. “About what?" He asked again, but unfortunately I didn't like to be questioned too much. She didn’t know she was being followed. Her head was bowed, arms wrapped tightly around herself. She looked so vulnerable. I could sense that there's something wrong with her. But I didn't know why it bothered me so much. I stopped when a voice reached us. “Here comes the bride." Her sister said, blocking her way, making her stop. I stayed hidden, watching them. “What does it feel like,” her sister sneered, “to be bound to the one you hate? Oh—right. I forgot. You’re mateless.” She added, her voice filled with mockery. My brows furrowed in further curiosity and confusion. A mateless wolf? That's impossible. As far as I knew. Every wolf was supposed to have their own mate. “You are just a loser. Always a loser. Nobody will want you." Her sister continued, followed by a sinister laughter, that caused my whole body to radiated with anger. I didn't know why I was affected by her words instead of her? Even Nyra didn't move an inch; it looked like she's used to it. “Don't worry sister. I really wish you, from the bottom of my heart, a happy marriage." She snickered. “Or who knows you might not last a night with him, since he's going to suck you dry like your mother." Her mother? And that's the moment when she finally lifted her head. “Don't ever mention my mother again. Or I will rip you apart." She threatened in a shaky voice. “Can you really do it?" Her sister countered. “You are just a weak wolf. It took you an extra one and a half year to shift when everyone shifted in their eighteenth or less. You are just a worthless b***h. I even wonder what the vampire king saw in you." Heat flushed through my veins. The monster in me stirred violently. Every words she uttered, every insult, it really hit me hard in the core. I felt like it's me who's being abused instead of her. Then unable to take it anymore, I decided to step in. “Vam... Vampire ...king?" Her sister's eyes widened when she saw me. Her movement was shaky, her body trembling like a leaf on the surface of water. I almost mistook her as the bold girl talking earlier. “I will leave both of you alone." She said and rushed away. I groaned inwardly in rage as I watched her leaving. As if Nyra didn't see me or even bother about who I was. She tried to walk away when I grabbed her hand. The same familiar warmth I had felt earlier erupted within me. The monster in me stirred ferociously. “Just let me go." She warned, her voice cold. It's almost amuse me to watch her act brave and stubborn. When some seconds ago she barely spoke up when her sister lashed at her. I pulled her back, yanking her to me. She tried to break free but I couldn't let her. My arms were wrapped her body as if she's just some treasure I didn't want to let go. But I knew better. She's just a pet who has a big role in curing my curse. Nothing more. “Don't act like you are strong. Your sister is right. You are just a weak wolf." I reminded, my voice very cold. Her furious blue eyes met mine for a moment. They seemed so mermerizing that the moment felt like an eternity. “So?" She countered, the softness in her eyes replaced by fury. “Then cancel the deal." She urged, making a grin play on my lips. I could see that she's very desperated in calling it off.. “Sorry to disappoint you, little wolf. The deal has been sealed. It is happening whether you like it or not. And you are becoming my pet." I replied and I saw her face distorted in disgust. “I would rather—" “Spend your life in dungeon?" I cut her off. A smirk touched my lips. “I have plenty of them in my kingdom. You will find the one that fit your size." She fought harder to free herself. In the struggle, her neck was exposed. And I lost my breath. Her blood pulsed beneath her skin—calling to me. Hunger unlike anything I’d ever known surged violently. The monster in me surfacing. I slammed her against the wall, ignoring her cry, brushing her hair aside to expose her neck fully. The softness of her skin. The undeniable sweet scent of her. And the power in her blood. I really wanted to have a bite. Just one taste. And I would be okay. “Let me go." She struggled. But I held both her hands with my large hand. A soft groan left my lips, her scent became more intoxicating. “Please, let me go." She begged, but it's too late. I couldn't stop. I really wanted a taste. Just a taste. Slowly I moved my mouth to her neck. My eyes changed to red. My fangs descended. My claws extended. The monster in me rose. Just as I was about to sink my teeth into her fresh, I was yanked back and she bolted, not dared to look back. Then the haze shattered instantly. My body stilled. And I was back to my normal self. “What the hell are you doing?” Draven snapped. “Losing control here could cause an uproar." I stood still, breathing heavily. “Having her around will not be easy." I mumbled to myself. “What do you mean?" He asked, confusion etched on his face. “It's very dangerous to have Nyra around. I've never felt such an urge before. It's like her blood is controlling the monster in me. She seems da ngerous." I said, the moment when I lost control replayed in my head like a broken record.
