After the long afternoon hike, Chris and Sam led our group into the camp where we would spend the night and then resume our adventures early tomorrow morning. We came to the rise of a hill covered in tall yellow grass, and at the bottom of the hill there was this little island of human activity amid a sea of wilderness. The campsite was lovely. It consisted of five immaculate white canvas tents set on wooden platforms that surrounded a big conical bonfire. There was a giant communal table made of rough heavy wood on which an elaborate buffet had been set by porters and cooks who had driven in from the Main Camp. The grounds inside the camp were little more than trampled brown dust, but just beyond the tents the dense yellow grass and the scrubby trees of the veld resumed their ubiquitous
