CHAPTER 27Anne hung up the receiver. She had a sense of relief, a sense of having escaped. She had almost said “Come.” It seemed incredible now, but she had wanted to say it. She thought it was the strangest conversation she had ever had—strange in what had been said, and strange in the way in which it had affected her.
