Chapter 2: The Cake

1214 Words
I remember when Mr. Right hired me. My first day was a total mess. He always shouts a lot, but he still is, until now, anyway. I was then wondering why no one wanted to be his assistant, but some people tried to be fair. It just won't work out. "This cake tastes.. Too much vanilla..." Trish said, thinking hard. She's tasting a vanilla chocolate in a vanilla white icing. "Babe, you said you wanted vanilla." Herman said, Trish's to-be husband. "You should taste it." Trish said as she held the fork with a bit of cake in it in front of Herman's mouth. "No, what your choice is, is my choice too." Herman said, trying to hide his impatience. "But.. It's hard to choose." Trish said, looking at the cake line up. Trish took a slice using another fork and tasted the chocolate cake with a vanilla icing. "Hmm.. this tastes.. I think I like it." Trish said, looking at Herman. "Please, babe, can you at least taste this one for me?" Trish said playfully. Trish held her fork up to Herman's mouth. "I will not stop holding this unless you eat it." Trish said, now sounding a bit disappointed. Herman, nodding his head a bit, ate the cake slice. He tried to smile as he slowly swallowed. Herman nodded his head in approval. "Alrighty. It's done and final," Trish said, smiling. She stood up and gave Lena the pen she was holding and a checklist of what food she liked to be served in her wedding. "Alright then." Lena said as she smiled at the couple, hugging the file folder in between her chest. Lena looked at the couple as they walked towards the door. Yes, chocolate cake. Mr. Right was so mad on my first day at work because I bought the wrong cake at my first event. "Hey, we have to go before Mr. Right loses it." Maya said, pulling Lena's hand. "I have to talk first to the caterer and give them the final list of cake and dishes." Lena said, stopping to stand still. "No, please. Jet just called me and he's asking for you." Maya said, now trying to walk, pulling her hand. "What? I wonder what it is?" Lena asked, trying to stand still, but Maya was just too powerful. "Please, just come!" Maya said in an increasing tone. Please just come! - Same thing Mr. Right shouted at me over the phone. I'm not really sure if I got the correct cake they wanted, but Mr. Right sounds so desperate for the cake. I mean, as long as the cake's sweet, it will make our brain release happy hormones. Also, I'm trying to avoid rush hour traffic, so, whatever. Chocolate cake with a vanilla icing it is!!! When I got back to the events place, I went straight to Mr. Right, I handed him over the cake, and I'm catching my breath trying to handle this precious cake with care and walking fast to be on time at the same time. I remember, Mr. Right is pointing his hand to someone and he saw me by the door. He slowly came close to me and looked at my eyes as he opened the cake box. He looked at the cake for a second before moving a muscle and nodding. "It's a chocolate cake topped with a vanilla icing," I said, as he faced backwards on the table, ready to go. Mr. Right sighed, and his head nodded left and right slowly. "It should not be a chocolate cake," he whispered, looking back at the table. "Huh?" I asked, confused. "Didn't you hear me?" Mr. Right looked at me again, looking pissed, now his tone was getting louder. "I said, IT'S A WRONG TYPE OF CAKE!!!" Mr. Right shouted as he pounded his hand on the table. Everyone in the room looked at us, curious about what was happening. "They have a dog so they request to NOT have a chocolate in the food!" Mr. Right continued to shout, taking a deep breath. His hand pounded the table again, and he nodded his head in disappointment. Oh well. First, no one told me it should NOT be a chocolate cake. It's my first day at this job and Maya, Mr. Right's employee said not to worry about anything, just bring myself in, and they will instruct me what to do when I get here. And the next thing I knew, I was still on my way here and a phone call from Mr. Right, asking me to buy a cake! He sounded so urgent and hung up the phone right away, so I didn't have any time to ask what type of cake I should buy. All I know is, this event is a gender reveal celebration and I just need to buy a cake and make last-minute decorations. I think the baker that was originally would be in charge of the cake encountered an issue. Therefore, no cake. And here I am, in a very messy situation. Anyway, I can't undo any of these already, but I definitely can fix everything (hopefully) and I have to act fast. But how? "I'll just buy another cake." Lena said, trying to remain calm. "No." Mr. Right said as he walked towards the door. Lena followed him. "Why? I'll just buy vani.." "I said no!" Mr. Right shouted as he stopped walking, Lena, now just an inch close to him. "But," Lena said softly. She could hear Mr. Right's heart pounding. "I need you here, can't you see?" Mr. Right face went calm as their eyes locked, then a minute of silence. "I need you to fix this place, we're not even fifty percent finished on the designs of this place." Mr. Right said. Eheeem.. "I know this is just a small gathering but, please.." Mr. Right continued, talking softly, with their eyes locked. Ehhheeeemmmm. Lena and Mr. Right looked on their right, curious about who made the sound. And it's Maya. "I'll buy another cake, make sure it is not, in any way, chocolate, and then. Lena can start instructing people what to do here. The stage looks so awful, look" Maya said, she pointed slowly at the stage. "The flowers seemed to be misplaced on the stage. Should it be there? Should it not be there? I'm not really sure." Maya continued as her shoulder went up and down. Lena tried to squeeze herself out of the door that was now half open. Mr. Right is still looking at Lena. He tried to clear his throat softly. "I'll start then." Lena said softly. Mr. Right, stood there for a second before he moved. "Lena?" "Lenaaa?" Maya nudged Lena. "The taste test is finished. We should recheck the decorations we need tomorrow. Maybe we missed something. So we can buy early, don't you think?" Maya continued. "Hmm. Sounds a good idea." Lena said, snapping from her flashback. "So, are you going to tell me why you are smiling like time stopped?" Maya teased. "Huh?" Lena said as she smiled. Lena started walking, trying to avoid Maya. "I saw you. Clearly", Maya said, teasing, as she also moved towards Lena. "No, I'm not!" Lena said as she chuckled.
