Natasha looked at herself in the huge mirrors of her closet, as she tried on the dress her sister had given her for the ball. They may both look alike when it came to their bodies, but there were definitely subtle differences. So subtle that Natasha was sure the only people who noticed were her and her sister, and the dress she had just pulled on. Which, to her dismay, was a little too loose than it would have been on her sister.
While they were both slim, her sister was a tiny little bit curvier than she was, making anything she wore a little bit too loose for Natasha.
Thankfully, both parents were not yet around, and she still had two hours to the ball, which was enough time for her to rush down to the sewing machine in the extra bedroom, so she could amend the dress to fit her.
Anastasia had already disappeared from the house a long time ago, saying it was the best, so when Natasha came out with her mask, neither parent would ask of the other child.
Natasha, on the other hand, already knew her parents' reaction to finding her missing, and could already imagine the words that would come out of their mouths in reaction.
Sometimes she wondered if she had done anything particularly wrong to them when she was born, but she couldn't just imagine what it was.
A quick tear and sew here and there, and she was done. And in just less than twenty minutes, she was back in the bedroom. Only this time, it was not hers, but Anastasia's. It was all part of the plan, since being in her own room when her parents arrived wasn't exactly going to make any sense.
Natasha almost gagged at how much purple was in the room. It was a bit nauseating, seeing how obsessed her sister was with her favorite color. Every f*****g thing in the room was purple.
She huffed and placed the dress on the bed, before going to do her makeup and hair.
Thankfully, just like her, Anastasia wasn't one to use a lot of makeup, so she did something really light, and smiled at her reflection, before slipping on the silver dress, which finally, fit like a glove. Just like it was supposed to.
She was still checking her reflection in the mirror when there was a soft knock on the door. Judging from how soft it was, and how nobody rushed into the room immediately after, she knew it definitely wasn't Anastasia.
With a chest that was beginning to thump wildly, she rushed to the bed and grabbed the mask, then switched off the light so it was only the purple strip lights that illuminated the room, giving it a dim look.
To Anastasia's credit, the lighting was beautiful.
She was still putting on the mask when the door finally opened, revealing her mother.
Coming from a mixed family, it had its pecks. Their mother's gene had prevailed, blessing them with a thick curly mass of hair, which looked like hers, and thick arched eyebrows that needed nothing more than a light brush. But they had both taken their father's vibrant blue eyes.
"You look so beautiful my darling." Anne said, smiling as she walked over to Natasha with her arms wide open.
Natasha just smiled, saying nothing as she allowed her mother to inspect the dress. Hopefully, she would be done quickly, and leave. It was really weird seeing her mother do all of these with her, knowing fully well that if she knew exactly who it was, she would not be as overbearingly sweet as she was.
"Here. Your dad asked me to give this to you. Wear them and meet us outside, while I go look for your sister to tell her we are leaving." She said, placing a small box in Natasha's hands, before disappearing from the room as quickly as she came.
Natasha stood rooted to the spot for a few moments, before sighing.
The night hadn't started yet, and she was already regretting agreeing to this nonsense.
If only she could go back in time, she would stand her ground and tell her sister to go to the ball herself. If the tables were turned and she was the one going through a break-up, she was sure no one would want to hear any excuse from her, and would still make her do her damn job.
When was she ever going to stop sulking up to her sister's antics?
She knew her mother would go ballistic the moment she opened the door to her room and found no one in there.
She switched the lights back on, before turning back to the mirror. She then opened the box and gasped as she saw what was inside.
The turquoise necklace matched her eyes so well, and as she picked it up and placed it next to her face, she could see that they were the exact same color.
These were the things Anastasia enjoyed being the golden child of the family, despite it being her, who worked her ass off for everyone, and did almost everything.
It was tiring.
But she had learned a long time ago, that it was no use being jealous of her sister, since it was all as a result of bad parenting. It had driven the both of them apart, even if they were supposed to be close to each other since they were twins! But their parents had managed to cast her aside, and pamper Anastasia into the brat she was today.
Soon, she was moving out of the house, and even if she still worked in the family business, she was going to finally have her freedom and privacy. Just like she always wanted.
Natasha put on the necklace and grabbed her purse, heading out of the room with the hopes that the drive to the ball wasn't going to take too long, and be free of any complications.
And it seemed like the heavens had heard her, because her parents had been occupied by an impromptu zoom call that had lasted up until they had reached the venue. Even as they reached the venue, it was obvious that they wouldn't be done anytime soon, and knowing her parents, they never played with anything that would add to their already full pockets. Natasha rolled her eyes as her father waved his hands and literally shooed her out of the car, telling her to go in before them and grab their seats.
Relief.
That was all Natasha felt as she stepped out of the car to do exactly as she was told.
She had taken exactly seven steps towards the entrance, when her phone rang out, blasting a ringtone that was definitely not Anastasia's.
And in a haste to get the call so her parents wouldn't hear it, she bumped into a very very hard wall. Well, not that hard, but hard enough for her to start tilting back, and towards the ground.
As if completely controlled by the devil, the damn ringing cut off immediately, and Natasha closed her eyes as she expected to hit the ground.
What she didn't expect, was for strong arms to wrap around her, stopping her from crumpling to the ground like a sack of flour.
Natasha's eyes immediately flew open, and she was met with the darkest pair of eyes she had ever seen!
