The San Francisco airport freaked Amelia a bit. She hadn't been in such a noisy place for a long time. On every side someone was talking, shuffling suitcases, but that wasn't the worst thing. Every now and then she had to get out of the way of some gentleman who was busy talking on the phone. They walked like zombies, not caring about others. A couple of them poked her until it hurt. So she tried to find a group walking towards the exit to join them. When such a group pushed through other passengers, they made something like a tunnel through which Amelia could get out. Finally, she spotted such a group and nimbly pushed her way towards them. Once outside, she found a map of public transport. After studying the plan, she went to the bus stop to wait for the appropriate bus line to arrive. She had planned to stay at the Travel Inn for a few days until she found somewhere to live. With a rather small budget, she knew she had to find a place to live within a week. She had four prearranged locations and hoped one would work. She wasn't going to waste the money she didn't have much. And she had to find a job too. Finally the bus arrived. She sat by the window. Some of the passengers looked at her strangely. 'It's probably because I'm not tanned,' she thought, because when she looked at the others, it was probably the lack of a tan that made her stand out. She arrived and checked into a motel. The room was modest and contained little furniture. Fortunately, she also had her own bathroom. There was no kitchen, but she could see a few bars and mini markets along the way. He'll also look for an inexpensive microwave, that should be enough to start with. She was a little hungry, but probably more tired. She remembered that she had in her handbag a mixture of nuts that she had bought on the way to the airport. It wasn't much, but it had to be enough. She washed it all down with water and went to get ready for bed. In the bathroom there was only a bar of soap, one towel (any joke?!?) and thank god a hair dryer mounted on the wall. After bathing, she lay down and fell asleep almost immediately.
The next day was a total disaster. Two of the four apartments she had booked were already rented and the third was significantly different from what the owner had described over the phone. Plus, the price was outrageous. Resigned, she ate a modest dinner, did some shopping for the necessities, and returned to the motel. On the way back, she bought the evening paper to look at the classifieds in the "for rent" section. She was supposed to look at one more apartment tomorrow, but she preferred to be prepared for further exploration. She also marked several job offers. Maybe she'll get one tomorrow. Despite the late afternoon, she decided to go to the park. The SkyStar Wheel was about a 20 minute walk from the motel and she loved the mill wheels. There was something majestic about them. Their slow turns always seemed graceful to her. She walked across the park toward the lighted circle. To the right of the path was a group of men sitting around a portable grill. They were very loud and you could see that some of them were already very much in the mood. She sped up her pace, trying to get past them as quickly as possible. "Hey Doll! Play with us!" It was starting to get dusk slowly and the park was still full of people so she wasn't afraid of them. Ignoring the provocations of drunken individuals, she accelerated even more to be out of their sight. She reached the attraction and stood in line at the ticket office. Seeing the number of waiting volunteers, she said that she was in no hurry and would go to see the nearby stalls. Tacky fairground trinkets hung everywhere, but the long seclusion had left her craving to watch. Her eyes sparkled with joy. She was even tempted to try on one of the less tacky necklaces. She was looking at herself in the mirror when she saw two men staring at her in the reflection behind her. They whispered something to each other as they looked at her. One of them, the one who called her "Doll" licked his lips lasciviously. She felt uncomfortable. She put down the necklace and moved on, dodging between the people. She tried to lose them, but to no avail. Panic slowly seized her. She knew she couldn't go back to the motel because they would inevitably follow her, and there were a few dark alleys along the way. Her imagination gave her more and more terrible scenarios.
"Think, think, think!" she thought to herself. She scanned the people nearby for a police uniform. Again no success. The two shady guys continued to follow her and closed the distance. She frantically looked around for some help. Finally saw a couple. Elegantly dressed woman and tall handsome man. They walked freely and surveyed everything around them like southern landowners tending their property. She walked towards them, a plan of action forming in her mind. As she got closer, she called loudly to get their attention
"There you are. Hello little sister!" After these words, spreading her arms, she clumsily hugged the woman
"Help" she whispered in her ear and when she pulled away she was relieved to see understanding in the stranger's eyes.
"Hi honey. I couldn't get out of work today. I had such a load of work that I didn't know what to put my hands in" she said towards the man after she hugged him too. The stranger, to her surprise, returned the gesture and then said "I thought they made you a night shift"
She pulled away from him further nervous and tense, but with a slight relief and gratitude. It was all written on her face. She took the woman's hand and let the man take her hand.
"Tired, honey?" he asked. There was concern in his voice. He fit the role perfectly.
They began to exchange sentences as if nothing had happened, slowly heading towards the mill wheel. For a moment she thought they were just waiting in line, but the woman showed a card and the staff let them through the gates. They got into the gondola and as soon as the door closed behind them, Amelia let out a stream of words.
"I am deeply sorry for my behavior. There are simply no words to describe my embarrassment at the whole situation. As soon as the wheel is over, I will leave and not bother you again."
"Why don't we make sure they're gone before you leave us?"
"Did you notice them?"
"Yes. They didn't like it terribly, but I'm not entirely convinced that they bought this fairy tale. Maybe we'll stay and walk the Lady home?", said the man, looking at his companion.
"Amelia. Please call me Amelia. I don't know. I don't want to spoil your evening even more."
"Nonsense," said the woman. "I need to help a lady in trouble. I'm Kama and this is my brother Eryk."
"Besides, we have a car parked nearby and we'll get to our destination quickly. That way they won't know which direction to look and you'll be safe at home in no time."
"Normally I'd still argue, but I think I've had enough excitement for today. I'll take a ride. Thank you."
