Lena woke up and stretched out. She looked around and realised she was laying in her bed. She began to doze off again until suddenly realizing that she fell asleep on the balcony. She sat up in a hurry and looked to the balcony. The doors were open and everything else seemed normal. Did I get up and drag myself to bed? Lena was confused but shook it off. She had probably just sleepwalked back or something.
She looked at her phone and saw a text from Julia. Her brothers were eating breakfast at the same kitchen they had met yesterday. Lena got up and walked over to the closet to find some of the few pieces of clothing she had brought to put on. When she opened the closet she stared at the content confused. It was full of clothes and it wasn’t hers. Yet everything was in her size. At first she tried to find her own clothes but gave up and put on a green, silk, wrap dress. The sun was shining and the dress looked comfortable. It will do until I find my own stuff.
When she walked into the kitchen, she was greeted by Julia and her brothers. Julia smiled and raised a pot of coffee as to ask if Lena wanted some.
“Yes, please.”
Julia poured a cup and gave it to Lena. Lena took a sip, closed her eyes and smiled. She then redirected her focus back to Julia.
“Julia, do you know where my clothes are? I opened the closet in the room I’m staying in, but I couldn’t find it?
Julia looked a bit puzzled.
“What do you mean, hon’? Aren’t you wearing some of it?”
“What? No this isn’t mine, I’m guessing someone borrowed me some stuff or something. No, I mean the clothes from our backpack.”
She then looked at her brothers. They were both wearing clothes she hadn’t seen before either.
“Well, I think your old clothes should be somewhere in there, but given that you only had a pair of pants and two t-shirts in the backpack I made sure to get you some new stuff. Or, well, I sent one of the girls the sizes and she picked up some things for you guys.”
“Julia, that is way too much. Don’t get me wrong, I’m truly grateful, but there’s like a billion pieces of clothing. And it’s, you know, expensive stuff.”
Julia laughed and tilted her head a bit.
“Honey, does it look like this pack is financially challenged?”
She guided her arm around the place to exemplify the wealth of the place.
“Right, I guess not. But it doesn’t matter anyway, we’ll be off soon enough.”
Both Lucas and Cody stared at her. Both had troubled expressions.
“What? I’m not going anywhere, I’m gonna to be trained by Alpha Logan!”
While Lucas was angry in his tone, Cody looked more afraid.
“But we’re safe here, and I don’t wanna run again. Please Lena.”
Cody’s eyes were shining with tears. Lena felt her heart melting but kept up her facade.
“I know this sucks guys, but this was not the plan. And even if I’m truly grateful that Alpha Logan and his pack has welcomed us, we have to get further away. We’re too close to the Bloodwood Pack and that means we’re still in danger.”
Lucas stood up with anger in his eyes, yet Lena could tell by the quiver in his voice that he too wanted to cry.
“Well I’m not going anywhere! You can do whatever you want, but I’m staying here!”
Lucas stormed out of the kitchen.
“Lucas…”
Lena looked at her oldest brother as he went out the door. A second after Jessica entered the kitchen.
“So he looked slightly upset, huh?”
Lena sat back in her chair and sighed. Meanwhile Jessica sat down and looked at Lena.
“You know, speaking of slightly upset, did I speak too fast yesterday?”
Lena looked at her confused.
“What do you mean?”
“Oh nothing, just that I got a text from the Alpha in the middle of the night saying you were sleeping outside on the balcony. Girl, I had like so few rules and you still managed to break the very first I mentioned within 10 hours.
She raised an eyebrow and pouted her lips a bit. Well this day is just lovely, isn’t it…
“I’m so sorry Jessica, I’m used to sleeping in the cold and the room was so hot. I just needed some cool air so I opened the doors and…” she hesitated “... well I stepped out for a second and apparently fell asleep.”
Jessica kept her stern eyes on Lena but eventually she relaxed a bit.
“It’s fine. Look, I took the scolding for this one, but I won't save you again, got it? So next time you break a rule then your ass is on the line. And don’t call me Jessica ‘cause you sound like my mom when she got all mad and stuff. It’s Jess.”
“Thanks, Jess.”
Jessica poured a cup of coffee and took a piece of toast.
“No problem, it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. So anyway, what’s up with the boy?”
Jessica nodded towards the door where Lucas had exited from.
“Oh nothing, he’s just mad that we have to leave soon.”
Jessica swallowed the coffee in her mouth and looked confused.
“Okay, and where are you guys going?
“I’m not totally sure, but we need to get going soon before Marcello finds a way to get to us. Basically, we have to get as much distance from him as possible.”
Jessica looked at Julia with a frown. Julia raised her shoulders and shook her head slightly.
“Right… well…”
“Cody we should get back and organize your stuff.”
Julia guided Cody out the door. He looked at Lena a bit but then followed Julia.
“What’s going on?” Lena tensed up.
“Girl, unless it’s ordered or approved by the Alpha then you aren’t going anywhere.”
Lena was shaken. Jessica’s eyes were stern, yet Lena could tell that she felt bad.
“We’re prisoners, is that what you’re saying?”
Jessica rocked a bit and clenched her jaw.
“You’re part of a pack that, well, let’s say it’s tense between them and us. And even if you deny being a part of the Bloodwood Pack then you’d still be rogues. Honestly, this can’t be a surprise to you?”
“But we’re not a threat to you?”
“Doesn’t matter babe, you’re still an outsider that stepped onto this land. And again, I’m not saying Neil is right about his ‘spy theory’ but come on girl, you’re like the almost-mate of a rival Alpha and your brothers’ are like Alphas in the making. At least the older one is. And you know…”
Lena looked at her unknowingly.
“You’re like, great hostages when it comes to Marcello. You can’t deny that.”
Lena felt her blood starting to boil; she was fuming. So that’s it then, we’re held captive so we can be a bargaining chip or something in the future. Immediately she rose from her chair and stormed out of the kitchen.
“Woah, Lena, where are you going?”
“I’m going to find the Alpha and settle this bullshit.”
Lena stormed away as she heard Jessica curse behind her. She made it just outside the Alpha’s office building when she bumped into Patrick.
“Well hello there, in a hurry are we?”
“I’m looking for Alpha Logan, I need to speak to him.”
Patrick laughed a bit but didn’t seem too worried.
“Do you now? Well sorry doll, but you just missed him.”
Lena let out a growl when she heard Jessica behind her trying to catch her breath.
“You are really testing my patience here, Lena. Did you seriously not listen when I gave you the rules?”
“Oh I listened alright, I’m just not following them. Don’t worry Jess, I’ll take the ass whopping or whatever.”
Patrick raised and eyebrow
“Does anyone wanna fill me in here?”
“Well Pat, Lena here believes that we are restraining her right to leave, and let’s just say that she’s less than happy about it. Girl, what the f**k did you think that bracelet was for?”
Lena looked at the bracelet on her wrist. In a moment of anger she ripped it open and threw it away. Jessica closed her eyes, shook her head and put her face in her hand. Patrick, however, just smiled.
“I gotta say, Sleeping Beauty, you woke up alright. But here’s the thing though. In around a minute my phone will ring and then I will have to say why your pulse isn’t monitored anymore. Now, I can either tell them the truth and then you can say ‘bye bye’ to the freedom you do have. Or, and I suggest you take this option, I can tell that we had to check your wrist for medical reasons which allows you to enjoy roaming around the grounds at least.”
At that moment Patrick’s phone started ringing. He held up the phone and looked at Lena with raised eyebrows.
“Which is it?”
Lena drew large breaths as she looked at Patrick. I can’t get out now anyways, it’s not worth it for now…
“Fine, I’ll behave.”
“Great.” Patrick answered the call. “Pat speaking. Nah, it’s fine, we just needed to check a bruise and how it’s healing, nothing to worry about.”
Lena put on the bracelet again as she sensed Jessica by her side.
“If it wasn’t for the fact that I would be killed myself then I would kill you, girl.”
Jessica stared at Lena with a hot fire in her eyes, yet Lena could tell by the smirk and wink that Jessica wasn’t mad. It actually looked like there was respect in her eyes.
