5. The Man behind the Wolf

What is this? What the hell is happening to me? Even though he wore sunglasses it was as if his eyes pierced through her, and though all she wanted was to look away in submission, she couldn’t. It was as if he forced her to look at him. So she looked. He wore all black, was around 6.2 tall and had wavy, dark brown hair. He was muscular, and though the sunglasses shielded his eyes she could tell he was handsome. He then looked away and as if she was let free of a spell, Lena was able to move again. She had never felt such a strong force from an Alpha before. Marcello was known for being a strong Alpha, yet he had never been able to make her completely submissive. However, she had heard the rumors of the Lake Maroon Alpha and that he was not only incredibly fierce and strong but also rather ruthless and dangerous. Logan Black. I remember Anders telling me about him, his name is Logan Black. 

She looked at the other people. Besides Patrick, three other people had entered the conservatory. A rather plain looking guy with short,  light brown hair and a round face, a brown skinned guy with almost no hair, and a black haired girl. All of them were wearing black clothes with a black leather jacket and sunglasses. 

    “Has she said anything about why they’re here?” the brown skinned man asked Julia.

    “Well, apparently the boys are in some sort of danger and so they fled. However, I don’t know why they’re in danger.” Julia answered while looking down. She feels it too. She is being submissive in the presence of the Alpha. 

    “Oh come on, that is such an obvious lie. The girl is engaged to the Alpha of the Bloodwood pack, why the f**k should she and her brothers be in any kind of danger? Marcello wanted to infiltrate our territory so he sent a girl and two kids because he knew we wouldn’t kill children. Oh, and he made sure that the girl was wounded so she wouldn’t seem dangerous.” The man with the light brown haired sniffled.

So I guess they have been notified about the moonstone ring… Great. 

    “Yeah that sounds like a great plan Neil… i***t…” The black haired girl replied. 

    “Well tell me Jessica, why the f**k Marcello should be afraid of two little boys, one who bears more resemblance to a golden retriever puppy than a wolf and another that even in his teens still has to hide behind his sisters skirts. Hey, Lucas was it not? Have you even gotten to second base yet?”

Lucas looked like he wanted to attack Neil. But before anything happened Julia interjected. 

    “Neil, he is only thirteen.”

    “So? I was like twelve when I had my first girl.” 

Lena couldn’t restrain herself and snickered at the comment. Neil looked at her angrily. 

    “What? Did I say something funny?” 

Neil frantically took off his sunglasses and took a step towards Lena. He seemed to have forgotten the subject and looked intensely at her. Lena hesitated but felt all eyes were looking at her. 

    “First of all; had your first girl? How charming. Secondly, I’m sorry, but in my experience the men who brag the most are the ones who have the most to compensate for.”

If Neil looked mad before then he was pissed now. His head had turned red and his eyes had a fury to them. 

    “Is that so, huh? Have a lot of experience, b***h?”

    “Enough!” 

Everyone froze as Logan Black stepped forward from the wall where he had been standing until then. With slow steps he placed himself in front of Neil and looked at him. 

    “If I’m interested in what you have to say then I will ask you. That means both theories regarding the Bloodwood pack infiltrating us and you lying about the age of you losing your virginity. Is that clear?” Logan said coldly. 

Neil shrunk and muttered a silent “yes Alpha” while looking down at the floor. Then Logan turned, took off his sunglasses, and looked at Lena. 

    “Now, tell me why I should help you and your brothers? And make sure it’s convincing, ‘cause right now your case is less than so.” 

Lena once more sensed the immense power from the Alpha looking at her. Now that the sunglasses were off it was even more intense and she was almost hypnotized by the dark blue eyes. But then she felt Cody tightening his grip on her hand and she remembered her purpose and regained some power. She took a deep breath and looked at Logan with confidence.

    “I’m incredibly thankful that you have helped us, but I’m sorry I can’t tell you anything.” 

You could cut a knife through the tension. Logan squinted his eyes.

    “Then what is stopping me from killing you? Right now you and your brothers are pack members from a rival pack. Not only that, you are in fact the future Luna of a rival pack. And yes, we have a code, we do not kill children. But I could easily kill you right here, right now and then put them in a cell until they’re old enough to follow you.” 

Even if the words were cruel and full of hate, Logan looked at her with what seemed like a cool and composed demeanor. Had this been Marcello, he would have screamed and broken several pieces of furniture by now. But Logan just stood with a rank posture and crossed arms while looking at Lena. 

    “Fine, Patrick and Kendrick, take the boys to a cell.” 

Patrick and the browned skinned man walked towards them. Cody started to panic yelling “no” and started to cry. Then Lucas stood up. 

    “Our name is Ashwood… “ 

Lena pulled at Lucas’ arm in terror

    “Lucas, no!”

    “... We’re the last living members of the Ashwood lineage and Marcello wants to kill us because we are a threat to him!”

It grew silent once again and everyone looked at Lucas. The only sound to be heard was a soft sniffle from Cody, who still clutched Lena’s arm. 

    “Good, I’m glad that one of you chose to tell. Of course, I already knew this. And for future reference I almost always know, so take this as a warning, ‘cause if you want to stay at the Lake Maroon Pack then you will have to follow my rules and obey my orders. Is that clear?” 

Lena was in shock. He already knew? How does he know? She looked around and she sensed that this was not only news for her. Only Patrick and Kendrick seemed like they knew beforehand. Both Julia, Jessica, and Neil looked totally surprised. Logan turned to the door. 

    “Julia, take the boys back to their room in the west flank and Jess show ms. Ashwood her room on the top floor.”

Accompanied by Patrick, Kendrick, and Neil, Logan walked towards the door. Lena got up from the bench. 

    “What? No!” 

Everyone stopped and looked at her. The shock of Lena actually opposing an order from an Alpha was clear. Jessica gave a short chuckle and out of surprise said “oh s**t”. Then Logan looked at Jessica and her smile faded while she looked down at the floor. He then turned to Lena, looked at her, and walked up to her until he was right next to her.

    “You are here by my mercy. You won’t tell me why you have come which means that you are in direct defiance to my authority. I have given you your sanctuary and I have even allowed this mercy to fuel an already complicated relationship with a nearby pack. So please explain to me what makes you displeased?”

Logan looked at her with cold, hard eyes. She could feel her wolf inside her whining and it gave a stung to her gut. You are here for your brothers. Your brothers are the most important thing, don’t forget that!

    “I just… I’m sorry, but I’d like to be near my brothers. Please, that’s all I’m asking for.”

    “Is it really? Is that really all your asking for?” 

Logan looked at Lena for what seemed like an eternity. For the first time he seemed angry. At one point Lena thought she sensed some sadness in his eyes as well as anger, but she swept the thought away. Why the hell would he be sad? He doesn’t seem affected by this connection at all. Sooner or later he’ll reject me and he’ll find another mate. 

    “If… if it’s any consolation your brothers live in the room right next to my room. And, you know, if nothing else stands in its way then you can just call me and I’ll get you guys together.” 

Julia looked at Lena almost pleadingly. Lena didn’t know Julia, but her brothers seemed to trust her and Lena’s overall feeling was good when it came to her. She nodded lightly. 

    “Okay.”

Lena looked at Logan once more. He kept eye contact for a second or two before taking on his sunglasses and walking towards and out of the door. 

There was some silence for a while before Jessica broke it. 

    “Cool, well that went… okay I guess. So yeah, let me show you your room and you know, stuff. Then we can meet your brothers for dinner, sounds good?”

Jessica started walking towards the door but Lena walked to her brothers. She gave them a big hug. 

    “Okay I’ll see you in a bit, alright. We’re safe now, everything is fine.” 

    “Yes, you’ll see each other in a bit, now come on girl, I don’t have all day!” 

Lena kissed Cody on the forehead and gave Lucas a squeeze before letting go and following Jessica out of the conservatory.
