The sky above the border gates didn't fall into night so much as it died, swallowing the horizon in a bruised, suffocating violet.
Freezing wind screamed down from the jagged peaks, whipping needle-sharp ice through the air with violent force. It was a howling whiteout, a brutal once-in-a-decade winter storm that threatened to freeze rivers solid within hours. Yet, the heavy iron-reinforced gates of the Shadow-Fang boundary remained wide open, waiting for their garbage to be tossed out.
Two heavy-set enforcers hauled Evelyn toward the threshold, her feet dragging uselessly across the packed snow. Her wrists were raw, oozing dark crimson onto the ice where the suppression chains had scraped away her skin. Every breath felt like inhaling shattered glass; the gaping, hollow void in her chest where her mate bond used to live throbbed with a sickening, cold agony.
"Hold her still," the taller guard barked, his greasy breath pluming in the freezing air.
Before Evelyn could pull back, he snapped a silver blade from his hip and drove it beneath the thick fabric over her left shoulder. With a harsh, tearing sound, he ripped off her apothecary patch the silver-embroidered leaf that designated her as a healer of the pack. The blade caught her skin, leaving a jagged red line across her collarbone, but she didn't even flinch. The physical pain was just a quiet echo inside the deafening noise of her broken life.
"No rank. No pack. No bloodline," the guard sneered, tossing the ruined badge into the mud beneath his boots. "You're just a bone for the rogues to chew on now."
Rough hands shoved her forward, forcing her onto her knees right at the boundary marker—a thick iron chain stretched across two stone pillars, dividing the protected territory from the chaotic, lawless wilderness beyond.
A soft, shuddering gasp sounded behind her.
Evelyn turned her head stiffly, her breath catching in her throat. Standing just behind the line of armored guards, wrapped in a plush cloak of white fox fur, was Sienna. Her half-sister looked fragile against the raging tempest, her big, dark eyes brimming with unshed tears as she clutched a heated fur muff to her chest.
"Evelyn..." Sienna whimpered, stepping past the guards despite their hesitant calls for her to stay back. She approached the kneeling girl, trembling as if the cold were shredding her delicate frame.
She dropped to her knees in the snow beside Evelyn, throwing her arms around her neck in what looked, to anyone watching from the watchtowers, like a desperate, grief-stricken goodbye.
"Oh, sister... how could you do this to us?" Sienna sobbed loudly into Evelyn's hair, her body shaking with theatrical gasps.
Then, as her lips brushed against the shell of Evelyn's frozen ear, the shivering stopped. Sienna's entire posture went rigid, cold, and razor-sharp.
"You really are as stupid as our mother was," Sienna whispered, her voice dropping into a razor-thin venom that sent a shockwave of cold straight down Evelyn’s spine. The tears vanished from her eyes, replaced by an ugly, triumphant glitter. "Did you honestly think a worthless Omega healer could sit on the throne beside an Alpha?"
Evelyn’s breath hitched, her fingers digging into the icy snow beneath her. "Sienna..."
"The Night-Shade extract tasted disgusting, by the way," Sienna purred softly against her skin, her breath warm, poisonous, and mocking. "It took weeks to dose myself just enough to look like I was dying without actually burning my wolf out. But watching Connor drop to his knees and tear that ring off your finger? Worth every drop."
Evelyn’s head snapped toward her, her throat working uselessly as rage flared white-hot through the numbness in her blood. "You... you poisoned yourself..."
"I took what should have been mine from the day we were born," Sienna murmured, pulling back slightly to look Evelyn in the eye. A small, cruel smile curved her delicate lips. "He’s mine now, sister. His pack, his bed, his crown. And you get to die in the frost, completely forgotten."
Sienna suddenly threw herself backward into the snow, letting out a sharp, pathetic wail. "Please, Evelyn! Don't curse the pack as you leave! I forgive you! I forgive you for what you tried to do to me!"
"Get away from her, my Luna!" Marcus, Sienna’s personal guard, rushed forward, grabbing Sienna by the shoulders and pulling her up from the snow.
Evelyn scrambled up, her hands reaching out in a desperate, furious impulse to tear that fake, sniveling mask off her sister's face. "She's lying! Connor, she poisoned herself!" Evelyn screamed toward the towering stone ramparts above the gate. "She set it all up! Look at her!"
High above on the central watchtower, framed against the dark, churning sky, stood a solitary figure.
Connor stood at the edge of the parapet, his crimson cape snapping furiously in the blizzard winds. He didn't move. He didn't lean over the railing. He simply stood there like a statue of black iron, staring down at her with total, unforgiving coldness. He watched her scream, watched her plead, and did nothing.
"Strip her," Elder Vance’s voice bellowed down from the lower platform, echoing over the roar of the wind. "No traitor leaves this territory wearing Shadow-Fang wool."
Before Evelyn could react, two guards grabbed the lapels of her thick, wool-lined traveling coat. They yanked it backward, tearing the heavy buttons clean off. She tried to pull away, but another guard planted his heavy boot in the small of her back, kicking her hard across the boundary line.
Her coat was ripped away, leaving her in nothing but a thin, linen tunic and torn trousers that offered zero protection against the howling sub-zero winds. The arctic air slammed into her bare skin like a thousand tiny knives, instantly leeching the warmth from her limbs.
"Close the gates!"
The massive iron-bound oak doors began to groan on their heavy iron hinges, slowly swinging shut.
Evelyn stumbled back onto her feet, her hands instinctively clutching her elbows as she took a trembling step toward the closing gap. "Connor!" she screamed, her voice cracking as the freezing air scorched her throat. "Connor, please!"
Through the narrowing slit between the massive doors, she saw Sienna resting her head comfortably against Marcus's shoulder, her eyes locking onto Evelyn with a final, cold glance of absolute victory. And above them, high on the wall, Connor turned his back, walking away into the warm safety of the keep without looking back once.
Thud.
The heavy iron bar dropped into place with a deafening, final sound that resonated through the frozen earth.
Evelyn was left standing completely alone in the blinding white void of the storm.
The wind howled with terrifying force, sweeping off the jagged mountain passes and throwing sheets of white powder across her face. Within seconds, her eyelashes were heavy with frost. Her exposed collarbone burned where the guard's knife had cut her, the blood freezing into a dark, crusty line before it could even run down her chest.
She turned away from the wall, taking one agonizing step forward into the deep snow.
Her thin leather shoes provided no shield against the ice; her toes quickly lost all sensation, numb and heavy like lead weights. She fell, her knees burying deep into a snowdrift. A choked sob tore through her lips, but the storm swallowed the sound instantly, leaving no trace of her agony behind.
Move, her mind whispered, a faint, flickering ember of survival fighting through the crushing weight of betrayal. If you stay here, you freeze. If you sit, you die.
She forced her trembling hands to push against the frozen ground, dragging herself back up. Step by bloody step, she blindly stumbled deeper into the borderlands a desolate stretch of uncharted forests, treacherous ravines, and wild monstrosities that even fully armored pack patrols avoided in the winter.
Her vision began to blur around the edges, dark spots swimming through the blinding white landscape. Her breath came in short, shallow gasps, her lungs feeling as though they were crystallizing into ice inside her chest. Her feet dragged, leaving a faint, dark trail of blood in the fresh snow where her bare ankles scraped against the sharp ice crusts.
She had lost count of how far she had walked. An hour? Two? The storm showed no mercy, swallowing all landmarks, all light, and all direction.
Suddenly, her left foot caught on a hidden tree root beneath the snow drift.
Evelyn tumbled forward, rolling down a steep, icy embankment before slamming hard against the trunk of an ancient, frost-covered oak. The impact knocked the last bit of air out of her lungs. She lay there in the deep powder, her cheek pressed against the freezing snow, unable to force her arms to lift her upper body off the ground.
Her eyelids grew impossibly heavy. The bitter cold that had been biting at her skin began to fade, replaced by a strange, deceptive numbness that crept inward from her hands and feet the dangerous, seductive warmth that came right before death.
So this is where it ends, she thought bitterly, her tears freezing into icy beads against her lashes. In the dark. In the cold. While they drink wine in the hall.
Then, a sound cut cleanly through the howling roar of the blizzard.
It wasn't the wind.
It was a low, guttural vibration that shook the frozen ground beneath her ear.
Evelyn forced her eyes open, her heart giving a sickly, terrified flutter.
Fifty yards up the ridge, silhouetted against the dark blue fog of the storm, a pair of glowing, crimson eyes burned through the whiteout. Then another set appeared. And another.
Huge, ragged forms stepped out from the shelter of the pine trees—wild wolves, massive and skeletal, their matted fur covered in icicles. Their yellowed fangs dripped with frozen saliva as they caught the scent of fresh blood drifting off her exposed collarbone.
A deep, hungry howl shattered the quiet of the ravine, echoed instantly by three more around her position.
The rogue hunters of the northern waste had found her scent—and they were closing in for the kill.
