CHAPTER TEN Rylie sat in the back of the ambulance with the girl as she was checked out. Aside from a few bumps and bruises, she appeared to be in good shape. At first, she was trembling, clearly traumatized. One of the police officers brought her a bottle of water, and after she took a few sips, she seemed to break out of the trance she’d been in. She looked nothing like Maren, with her dark, stringy hair and tanned limbs. And yet, Rylie couldn’t help seeing her sister. Maybe Maren had suffered a similar fate, bound and gagged and hauled off . . . but they would never know that. At least this girl’s story would have closure. “Do you think you can talk?” she asked gently. The girl nodded. “Are you an FBI agent, really?” Rylie nodded. “What is your name?” “Ava. Ava Kowalski,” she said
