Sleeping proved to be near impossible. My thoughts churned, tangled in the fears I knew would confront me tomorrow. The room I’d been staying in, carefully guarded by William, was a sanctuary he made sure only he and I were allowed to enter. Yet tonight, it felt more like a cage, the silence pressing in on me from all sides. I turned my head to look at the clock beside me—it read 2 a.m. Letting out a sigh, I accepted the inevitable: I wouldn’t be sleeping tonight.
